Cate the owner is THE most perfect host. Her attention to detail from the bedroom with fresh linens and comfortable beds, home made heavenly brownies which curbed my choccie habit and shortbread biscuits, to her full English breakfast with quality products, home made breads 'n jams, freshly squeezed orange juice, chicken eggs from her girls, this and much more just made my stay perfect. Thank you Cate & Ben for your great hospitality and wish you much success xxx

I decided to book Ben's Yurt for my partner's birthday which can be found in the beautiful gardens surrounding Broughton House. The house is approximately 35 mins on foot to the village of Cartmel. From the moment of booking, Cate, the owner of this beautiful place could not have been more helpful, warm and friendly. She made the effort to be there upon our arrival and showed us to where we were staying. A lovely little hut or "HQ" consisting of a room with a double and single bed, bathroom and kitchenette. Cate had even made my partner a Victoria Sponge Birthday cake which was absolutely gorgeous and so very kind. We were also shown Ben's Yurt, a tasteful "snug" with sheepskin throws, cushions, a fire and lots of candles of which we made use of later on that evening. The space also has an oven pit and BBQ with lots of seating, and the sofa's in the Yurt can double up as beds if a larger group wanted to go. (We're already planning a trip back with friends!). We shared our accomodatiom with 15 chickens and Muffin the house dog, who was lovely. Don't worry, the chickens are very well behaved and only add to the character of this wonderful accomodatiom.

Cate gave us a map which helped us for the walk down and a menu for breakfast where you could specify the time you want to eat and exactly how much you want to eat, but more about that later.

The beds were super comfy, with crisp white cotton covers. There's no risk of being cold as there is a radiator and hot water bottles if needed.

In the morning we ate in the conservatory overlooking the gardens. Cate had put on a fine spread with freshly made bread, baked the night before, homemade jams, muesli cereal and freshly squeezed grapefruit and orange juice. My partner with his eyes which tend to be bigger than his belly ordered the homemade pancakes with syrup, followed by two full English breakfasts (one each!). Very rarely am I ever impressed as much as I was with these. Every aspect was cooked to perfection. I can be a little fussy if my bacon isn't crispy and tomatoes are underdone, but I couldn't fault Cate's.
For the price that Cate charges, the service goes beyond expectations. We didn't want to leave. I have never met such a welcoming, funny, and warm host. Our trip to L'Enclume in the evening was good, but our stay at Broughton House was what made our trip.

Thanks so much Cate and Ben, we shall be back. Xxx

My partner had planned a surprise trip to Cartmel for my 30th birthday to visit the exquisite L'enclume, the meal was out of this world as you'd expect from a restaurant of such a high calibre. However, the real treat of the surprise was meeting Cate and staying in her outstanding little country pile. We stayed in the yurt and cabin for two nights and finished off in the east wing of the house. Loved every minute of our stay, the yurt and cabin was like nothing I've experienced before, all the creature comforts of self catering in a B & B environment......this goes beyond just being quirky, the cabin it's self was very comfortable with fully fitted kitchen and bathroom, the yurt was just yet another added bonus that provided a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere to put the world to rights. Above all, we we're nestled away in a quiet, secluded corner of the grounds which was very discreet; the only disturbance coming from some very much welcomed wondering hens (talk nicely to them and they provide you with the tastiest fresh eggs in the morning). This is a must visit B & B, the only downside was Cate couldn't accommodate us for an unplanned 4th night. Me and Rachel can't wait to come back or maybe even a trip to Columbia. PS the breakfasts, brownies, cookies, Victoria sponge and sourdough were all the best I've ever tasted.

A beautiful mellow house, (reminiscent of a Jane Austen vicarage) which is oh so comfortable and welcoming. Wish we could have stayed longer and would highly recommend Broughton House to anybody who appreciates comfort and good food over everything else. The south room has a big welcoming bed with pristine white linens and a view over the lawn with meandering hens - think eggs for breakfast, along with freshly squeezed orange juice and freshly ground coffee beans. The location is so quiet and dinner in Cartmel is just down the road.

Yes this is a very beautiful house to stay with such a lovely host Cate! We had a lovely welcome very accommodating in allowing us in early to change and also being so kind as to offer us a lift so thank you very much Cate. The house is full of character...English charm the bedrooms are completely comfortable and yes I will agree with previous reviews the bed is one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in mattress pillows and duvet all bliss! I particularly loved the decor, the views from my window, the toiletries in the ensuite were very good. I liked the homemade biscuits and brownies in our room as well as a great selection of teas/coffees available to take from the landing, fresh milk in a jug in our fridge...things to use if you forget all these touches were noticed. It gives a homely feel to provide books and magazines in the house to read. The breakfast choice is great and you can choose a time to suit your selfs ....the food you can tell is all homemade and of very good quality, I had a lovely fruit and yogurt platter and also pancakes! Eggs are fresh as you can get...I had a perfect boiled egg and soldiers and scrambled wish I could make them as well!

The yurt and cabin look brilliant I would love to return and stay there too. Cartmel is a beautiful place with great pubs and restaurants we went to l'enclume and it was a fabulous experience! We also spent a day at the racecourse and this was a great day.

Thank you Cate you made us very welcome in your house we really would love to return

Hello Karla - and thank you for your lovely review of your stay with me last weekend. I'm so glad that you enjoyed it (and that the sun came out so that you could go to the races in your dresses, and not wellington boots!) Come back soon and try some glamping! Thank you again - with best wishes - Cate
