“Fantastic stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2013

Just returned from a 2 night stay here for our 25th wedding anniversary. Everything was excellent and made even better by the friendly staff at Stanley House and The Woolpack. We really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere at this B n B with the open larder, friendly breakfast chat from staff and other guests. As other reviews state the army truck ride to the Woolpack is a must, such a fun experience, and not just open to guests at Stanley house, during our journey there were two families fron Fisherground and Eskdale campsites, their kids loved it. I noticed some negative comments about room size, well ours was a fab size, a large king size + bed loads of storage two easy chairs a coffee table and tv, and still lots of room to move around. The en suite was also large with a full size bath with shower over. Eskdale itself is the gem of the lakes far from the crowds but some lovely walks and the lovely Ravenglass and Eskdale railway. If you want loads of shops then this isn't the place for you but if you want peaceful, beautiful surroundings and a friendly welcome come here! Between Stanley house and the Woolpack inn you will have a great stay no matter what the weather!

When I booked this online I wasn't sure which place it was in Eskdale and when I arrived I felt I might have made a mistake as in the past the building had been a hostel rather than a hotel. I need not have worried because it has been nicely redecorate and is a very pleasant place to stay.
The room was clean and quiet with a lovely view over the large grounds which go right down to the River Esk where you can swim or sit by the river.
Breakfast was excellent.
They don't do an evening meal but they will give you a lift to The Woolpack which is owned by the same people, and does an excellent menu and good beer. I chose to walk back for the exercise which took 30 minutes.
Service was fine and very relaxed and friendly.

My family and I had a perfect holiday here last week. The staff at the House were amazing. My young children loved it. Particularly the cooked breakfast and the fact it was just yards from the La'al Ratty Train station. Thank you Leslie so much, and also to the staff at the Woolpack. We will be back soon.

Room Tip: Family suite was superb.

I book accommodation in the lake district annually, for a group of walkers, which is always difficult and increasingly expensive. This year we were offered the Stanley House by The Woolpack, which proved to be most satisfactory. It is located conveniently for a number of walks both high and low level and is even served by its own station on the Little Ratty. A 10 mile walk to the coast and a train ride back made for an easy Sunday after climbing Scafell Pike the previous day.

The hotel is not manned at night, which is not a problem. The level of comfort is perfectly satisfactory for walkers and the breakfast was of a good size and served by friendly staff.

As to the price, I think it is the least (£90 per room per night) we have paid for several year's. It was more than 30% cheaper than last year's venue - The Wasdale head Inn.

We recently stayed in this hotel as part of a group taking B&B plus meals at the Woolpack. The public rooms are all good and the breakfasts and staff providing them are excellent but don't expect to see any staff after this until breakfast the next day. The room we stayed in was only average at best and we had to go searching for teabags and biscuits on one night. The nightly trip down to the pub in the old army truck was entertaining but definitely not for the less agile. Like the hotel the Woolpack seemed to be understaffed, service at the bar was slow but considerably faster than that at the table. Three people in our group were served their main course after others had finished. Some of the food was served lukewarm and some of the portions were a bit on the stingy side or not as described. All in all a good time was had but the B&B and the pub are both seriously overpriced for what you get.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front see the trains and those on the rear see the gardens and river.

Just returned from a fabulous hen do at Stanley house. House itself is large and comfortable with gorgeous log fire. Owners are relaxed and allowed us free run of the house, including kitchen and huge fridge for supplies (of the alcoholic variety). Breakfast was great - local produce cooked and served by lovely accommodating staff.

We chose the Dine&Doze offer which was great value for money. Dinner for 2 nights was at the local pub the woolpack - loads of menu choices,l great food cooked by the lovely Caroline. We were picked up from and returned to Stanley house in an army jeep- great fun. Staff at the pub were lovely and attentive and the barman also masqueraded as our chauffeur!

Saturday we had a go at archery (with varying degrees of success) organised by Steve from west lakes adventures. We had great fun with excellent tuition from Stuart aided by Caroline. West Lakes Adventures are based next to the woolpack which came in very handy for a post archery mulled cider!

All in all a fabulous weekend, great accommodation, great service and great fun. Would highly recommend.

A great sized property to rent for a big group of family and friends. We've just had our second trip there and it was stunning (again). The house is warm and welcoming with its open fires (logs a plenty) and backed up by central heating.
We could some and go as we wished and there was no worry about noise pollution as we were away from anybody. No street lights mean you can see the stars in the sky and looked beautiful. The kids were entranced and the same could be said of the adults.
Close by are walks to waterfalls and a small train station (not working through the winter months). A couple of local pubs both of which serve scrumptious food which you might need after the walking
