Wha House Farm in Eskdale is a National Trust Hill Farm tenanted by hill farmers Mr & Mrs Crowe. Their sheep roam as far as Scafell Pike. The farmhouse is clean and comfortable and like most NT farms in this area which provide Bed and Breakfast, there are no en-suite facilities, however this is reflected in the price per night. The lack of en-suite facilities is down to the National Park Authority who are reluctant to grant planning permission for internal alterations to old farms.
We arrived late afternoon and had arranged in advance that Mrs Crowe would leave a key for us. This was because the Crowe's go out Hound Trailing (which I found out is not a blood sport) and had gone to a meeting near Keswick with their dogs.
They hadn't returned when we got back from the pub at 9.30pm but they met us all at breakfast and made us very welcome indeed, displaying a genuine interest in where we had been the previous day, and where we intended to go walking that day.
The breakfast was the best you can get anywhere and the beds were extremely comfortable. The heating came on during the early morning period and this allowed us to dry our damp gear from the previous day. The house also has a comfortable lounge with tea making facilities with fresh milk kept in a fridge.
I would recommend Wha House Farm providing en suite facilities are not considered to be essential.
