Hubby and I stayed here for three nights and enjoyed every meal. Servings were huge our favourite was the meat lasanga which we had for two nights. The choc pudding was great, and staff always checked if we needed anything else within a few mins of serving us our food. The Cumberland sausages served with breakfast were very good.

The worst food we've ever had. Mash was grey dry and lumpy. Cumberland sausage was pale and waterlogged. Wonder if it had been cooked in water bath in the oven. Steak n ale pie had raw pastry on the bottom and pastry was thick n soggy. 'Home cooked chips' were obviously frozen skinny fries and were soggy. Our friends had similar poor meals which their dog ate most of but they didn't complain to management. We did and were given a string of excuses blaming the butcher and the mashing machine. Asked if we wanted a drink as recompense. No apology and quite an abrupt manner from this lady. We left. Speaking to a 'local later in the evening he said he wouldn't tell anyone to go there as the landlord is cooking and has a captive audience but is spoiling things.Seeing the landlord/cook leave the kitchen and enter a cattle truck to fix lights for outdoor bar the previous night should have maybe warned us how this place is run. Disgusting. Really need Kitchen Nightmares to visit here.

Lovely location for this old inn. Pool of water in front of bar that you had to stand in to order - weird. There is a restaurant area which is completely soulless despite the nice view. Menu is meat based and says everything is home cooked - can you call oven chips home cooked? The meat was good quality but the pastry in the beef and ale pie was truly awful - a lump of raw pastry on the bottom with over-salted gravy. Overcooked carrots and peas - hardly adventurous veg. Staff were friendly but this place really needs to up its game. The standard of cooking does not justify the prices charged.

All in all, a very disappointing meal and we will not return.

In all my years of living and recently visiting Eskdale I have a soft spot in my Heart for the King George , as a child growing up in the valley , every time we went there it evoked the ideal of what a real pub should smell and look like !

The slate floors , the fire in the winter, the smell of food cooking from the kitchen and the unique smell of the beer , all wonderful memories .

Its all still there but the food is not what it used to be , please bring it back and return this wonderful pub back to its former glory .

We stayed nearby and popped in here for a light lunch after a walk. The beer was good and there were games for the children in a tidy outdoor area. The staff were friendly and efficient and the food was good, although we only ordered baguettes and chips so can't comment on the full menu.
