My partner and I are getting married here in September 2014 so we thought we'd pop down from Scotland over the Easter weekend for a short break. Having walked into reception we noticed an immediate change in décor and atmosphere. We were greeted warmly and made to feel very at home straight away. We stayed two nights and ate both in the bar and restaurant and we have to say the food was delicious and the service was excellent.

The hotel was packed all weekend with the beer garden was full of life. All in all, a great stay and would recommend to anyone. We are thoroughly looking forward to our wedding in a few months, and the beautiful surroundings will only add to the day.

Was visiting the lake district on an work away day to climb Scafell Pike for charity - all the arrangements were taken care of for me. Found this place to be a lovely little hotel and bar, just what you'd expect from a quiet country village in Cumbria! Rooms were clean and spacious and the staff were really friendly and attentive. We had dinner on both nights of our visit and the food was excellent.

The only two downsides were the mattresses were too soft (purely personal opinion - I like a firm mattress!!) and the the floorboards of the upstairs where I was staying in the lodge part were a little squeaky with people moving about overhead.

In any case, these are far from reasons not to stay there

Room Tip: Be careful of the downstairs rooms because of the squeaky floorboards overhead..

I recently went to the Bower House for a meal during a stay nearby for a short break with my husband. We noticed the Bower House on a walk and decided to go back that afternoon for a meal. The barmen where very welcoming and easy to talk to helping us decide what to have to eat and explaining the reduced menu was due to a recent change of ownership. Everything was going well until a very bossy lady walked in who I later learnt was the manageress. The barmen quite obviously had everything under control and there service was a pleasure. The manageress then came in and began to question them and was being very rude towards them. When she came over to talk to us she was no where near as pleasant and the younger gentleman had been. Being in the hospitality business myself this had annoyed me and put a downer on the rest of the evening. All in all the food was lovely as was the service. My advice is that the "manageress" takes more of a back seat and leaves the gentleman to it. We didn't stay at the Bower House so I cannot comment on the rooms.

loved it here, we only stayed one night but would happily have stayed a few more, the staff were very welcoming, and the room was very clean and comfortable. we had a lovely meal here at a very resonable price and good size portions, was very quiet in the bar that evening but that was good with us we sat playing cards and the barman was very helpfull and polite, had a great nights sleep, lovely cosy bed, we were just as impressed with the breakfast as we had been the evening meal, was the nicest breakfast we have had in a while, all in all very good say and will deffo stay again :)

This lovely inn is tucked out of the way in Eskdale Green, an unspoilt area of the Lakes. We booked a one night stay here and, although there was initially a little confusion about our room, the desk staff bent over backwards to sort things out for us and we were given a very nice twin room with dual aspect views over the garden. The room was warm and cosy and the beds comfortable. The furnishings were fine including a wardrobe to hang your clothes and a bedside light each - unlike the more expensive establishment where we had stayed the previous night! The bathroom had both a bath and a proper shower over the bath and there were lashings of hot water.

We had dinner in the bar - my duck was excellent, as was the glass of Merlot with it. The log stove was lovely.

A good breakfast choice included both porridge and kippers and portions were generous.

All in all a very good stay and very reasonably priced - excellent value for money.

We booked this hotel for one night between Christmas and New Year for a family wedding be held nearby. The Hotel is as named an Inn dating back to 17th Century and you can feel the history as you walk in. The warm cosy fires, excellent food and friendly helpful staff were a delight on our arrival.
Our family room was set above the games room in the original building (there is a more modern annexe complex available) and was large and spacious with a good sized bathroom with bath but no shower (just a shower attachment on the taps).
The bedroom had two beds, a double for myself and my good lady however the mattress was way to hard for a comfortable night's sleep and a single bed for our daughter who had no complaints.
The wardrobe was free standing and unfortunately due to the uneven nature of the 'original' floorboards was unstable and should have been secured to the wall as when full the door swung open and the wardrobe almost toppled forward.
The room itself was slightly cool due to being on the corner of the building with only single glazed windows.
After attending the wedding we returned to the Inn before midnight and were looking forward to a bath but unfortunately there was no hot water.
When we awoke the next morning we found out there was still no hot water nor heating. We had to boil the kettle to make having a wash bearable (I know we're getting softer now we're older) but unfortunately the sink plug surround was loose and the water emptied out as soon as it was poured in!
We made our way to breakfast which was absolutely delicious alongside the warming fresh coffee where we mentioned the lack of heating and hot water only to be informed 'yes we think the boilers is broken' not even an apology!
On Checking out there was again no apology or even an offer of a reduction in the room price.
A lovely Inn set in a beautiful location with great food and generally helpful and amiable staff let down by the facilities.
I contacted the manager but have had no response.

Recommendation stay in the annexe their heating and hot water was fine!

Room Tip: request a room in the more modern annexe and don't miss the breakfast
