“Lovely clean friendly English pub.”
Reviewed 18 September 2011

We stayed for the weekend over the beer festival. The food was hearty, tasty, traditional and very well presented the, portions are also very good. The bar staff are very friendly and nothing was too much trouble and will go out of their way to do anything for you.The rooms are very clean and a good size for 2 people. The landlord (Jonty) and staff welcomed us like longlost friends and made us feel very welcome at all times. We highly recommend anyone to come and stay here it is a must visit. We enjoyed the ambiance and friendly welcome so much we have already booked to go back again.

We stayed in the Cabin, which is really a nice static caravan down some steps at the back of the pub. It was perfectly adequate for a hiking weekend, but maybe a bit squashed for a family staying a week. It had everything you needed, large fridge-freezer, big double bedroom, and a great shower.

It's always useful staying at a pub and this one is now like a proper Lakeland hiker's bar - not too fussy and good beer. A vast improvement on previous times. However, a word of warning - on the Saturday night we were kept awake until 2am by extremely loud groups of people drinking outside, only a few yards from the caravan. We could literally hear every word of their very shouty, drunken conversation about politics. My partner asked them to keep it down twice but to no avail. In the morning, he told the manager about this who was apologetic and explained that they have a licence until 2am on Saturdays.

Personally, I feel if you're going to have rooms (not cheap, either) very close to the outside area, it's not really acceptable to have people drinking out there until 2am. It's got to be one or the other - a late pub or a B&B. Apparently the manager had asked them to be quiet too, but really he should have asked them to drink inside as they were disturbing people. They were not residents - from the local Outward Bound centre apparently - but I was very close to bashing them all over the head with a frying pan at 2am. That would have put an end to their endless shouting about the state of the world very nicely.

I didn't eat here but my family did and I think it was average, maybe a bit overpriced, as most places appear to be in the Lakes in August, so I'm glad we were self-catering.

The location is probably the best in the world if you like the wilder side of the Lakes, away from the madness of Keswick and Ambleside. I would probably stay here for a walking weekend again as it was cheaper than a lot of self-catering places, but that noise put me off.

We didn't stay here but did look at a room for future reference. It looked nice. However we had a meal in the restaurant and it was really very average in a "pack-em-in" eating area. We wouldn't go rushing back. It's a shame, this place has been awful for years and under its new management has been showing promise, but really didn't do it for us.

we have just returned from a week in the cabin (actually a very up market caravan)it was very clean and comfortable with every thing we needed.the setting is very calming. its very private too..we spent one early morning watching a deer eating the grass and wandering up the field behind.. yet the pub is just up the stairs where you can enjoy good food and real ale..the staff are very warm and welcoming and obliging..the king george 4th has changed hands in the last couple of years and i can reccomend the new owners considerate care of the pub and accomadation...lovely...

Room Tip: probably better for two adults and 4 children

we went for a meal here because someone that lives near it had reccomended it.
We were highly disapointed.
The food was awful.
We chose two different meals from the specials board, the pork i had was clearly not fresh, this was obvious from the first bite, there was an awful taste to it, also very over cooked, probabally to hide the fact that it was well past it's use by date.
The chicken my partner had was flavourless & chewy.
The tiny potion of microwaved veg was so over cooked, the carrots broke when you tried to pick them up with a fork. The mashed potato had no milk, cream or butter or seasoning added to them so tasted of nothing.
The 'spicy' chicken my partner had, had no flavour what so ever, certainly no spice.
Even the chips were inedible & over cooked, we suspect they had been re cooked many times. I managed to eat 2 chips, my partner had about 8, then we gave up.
when we told the waitress this, she didn't say a word, just walked away, no appology.
we assumed she'd gone to tell the chef, but she didn't return.
we were offered no refund, no appologies, no compensation, not even a free coffee (not that we asked for one or would of wanted one, but the offer would of been nice)
The real ale was good, but that's because they buy it from a near by inn that has it's own micro brewery.
We will definately not be back, if we want the real ale again, we will go to the inn that makes it where we know the food will be good.
I wonder about the person that recomended this awful food to us, if he has bad taste, or if he just didn't like us.

As stated in the title we didn't actually stay there but felt I should write something as we were given the best service each time we went in for a meal when staying at the campsite down the road.

The food was lovely and the atomophere was lovely and welcoming even on a busy Saturday afternoon
