“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 November 2011

I booked this friendly pub as it was remote, accommodated 8 people and was remote enough for our group to enjoy themselves.
On arrival the lady welcomed us with open arms and discussed the local area whilst serving us fantastic traditional ales and great food.
The landlord, Jonty, was also a fantastic host and understood our requirements.
The accommodation was well finished, well equipped and very comfortable.
Overall I would recommend this place to anyone and have already booked for next year.

Room Tip: All are good but the apartment was great!

Stayed with two mates for a scafell trip. this pub is set in a great location and has a great atmosphere, really good selection of beer which was enough reason to stay, let alone the friendly and enthusiastic staff and landlord. very welcoming and accommodating.
The Apartment was really comfortable with good beds, open fire, tv, ipod dock. separate well equipped kitchen.

Just returned from a week’s camping at nearby Fisherground. This was the perfect distance for stumbling home after each night’s delights at the King George IV’s Beer Festival. The beer was excellent – “Perfection in a Glass!” It is looked after with passion – there were over 30 real ales to choose from, most of them locally sourced, plus a range of lagers and traditional ciders. There was good live music for the festival weekend, which went down well with locals and holidaymakers alike.

This is an attractive traditional pub, with flagstone floors and an open fire. Even without the beer festival on, there are still 9 real ales to choose from and good traditional pub food. Good range of meals, the specials change regularly, and the 10oz sirloin was especially yummy! Managed to find a gap for the puddings, which went down very well (they don’t scrimp with the cream either).

The landlord and bar-staff are friendly and welcoming, as are the locals. It is certainly a pub that is much easier to get in to, than it is to ever get out of! This was our second visit this year, and nothing disappointed on the return trip. If you are looking for good, honest food and beer, then this is well worth a visit.

We also (somehow?) ended up going home with a black cat.

We stayed in The Cabin during the beer festival, a perfect choice for a group of friends to have a few days away. It was great to have comfortable beds, a powerful shower and heating whenever it was needed, The Cabin is well maintained, the kitchen area is perfect for making a few meals but the food in the pub was lovely so we didn't do much cooking! I wouldn't suggest this for a family holiday with young children unless you are prepared to drive further afield to entertain the little ones. We had a great time and would book this again!

Stayed for a week in September.Wanted a quiet area with good walks. This place was brilliant. Stayed in the 2/4 person apartment downstairs.Plenty of room for the two of us,not so sure for four.Had all you need apart from a washing machine. Clean and tidy. Bonus,a large corner bath which was absolute bliss after a long walk on the fells.Plus, incredible value at £295 a week at this time of year.Staff were really friendly and helpfull.Traditional tasty pub food with good value for money.A good selection of well kept real ales which change regularly. This pub is not your carpeted, comfy armchair, roaring log fire, cosy type of country pub,but if you are here for walking or hiking, want good accomodation, good food, great beer and friendly, approachable staff you can't go wrong. We will be coming back for sure.
ps They do have a log fire.

We stayed for the weekend over the beer festival. The food was hearty, tasty, traditional and very well presented the, portions are also very good. The bar staff are very friendly and nothing was too much trouble and will go out of their way to do anything for you.The rooms are very clean and a good size for 2 people. The landlord (Jonty) and staff welcomed us like longlost friends and made us feel very welcome at all times. We highly recommend anyone to come and stay here it is a must visit. We enjoyed the ambiance and friendly welcome so much we have already booked to go back again.

We stayed in the Cabin, which is really a nice static caravan down some steps at the back of the pub. It was perfectly adequate for a hiking weekend, but maybe a bit squashed for a family staying a week. It had everything you needed, large fridge-freezer, big double bedroom, and a great shower.

It's always useful staying at a pub and this one is now like a proper Lakeland hiker's bar - not too fussy and good beer. A vast improvement on previous times. However, a word of warning - on the Saturday night we were kept awake until 2am by extremely loud groups of people drinking outside, only a few yards from the caravan. We could literally hear every word of their very shouty, drunken conversation about politics. My partner asked them to keep it down twice but to no avail. In the morning, he told the manager about this who was apologetic and explained that they have a licence until 2am on Saturdays.

Personally, I feel if you're going to have rooms (not cheap, either) very close to the outside area, it's not really acceptable to have people drinking out there until 2am. It's got to be one or the other - a late pub or a B&B. Apparently the manager had asked them to be quiet too, but really he should have asked them to drink inside as they were disturbing people. They were not residents - from the local Outward Bound centre apparently - but I was very close to bashing them all over the head with a frying pan at 2am. That would have put an end to their endless shouting about the state of the world very nicely.

I didn't eat here but my family did and I think it was average, maybe a bit overpriced, as most places appear to be in the Lakes in August, so I'm glad we were self-catering.

The location is probably the best in the world if you like the wilder side of the Lakes, away from the madness of Keswick and Ambleside. I would probably stay here for a walking weekend again as it was cheaper than a lot of self-catering places, but that noise put me off.
