“Disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2014

After reading all the good reviews we gave this place a try today. They have a good range of kids meals for £4.50 main meals start around £10.50. The kids meals are a good size for 6 year olds. I had mushroom pasta and garlic bread which was beyond bland. Two piles of fettoccini with a valley of wild and chestnut mushrooms in garlic sauce in between with a weird slice of burned garlic bread on the side. My husband had chicken which was ok (just ok). The children enjoyed their meals but the lasagne was dry. All meals were just a bit heavy and bland and the atmosphere was like eating in an old folks home. Prices reflected the location rather than the quality of food in our first experience. Perhaps we chose the wrong dishes.
The staff were friendly and attentive. I have noted comments that there are only two pubs (this and the Boot Inn), there is also the Woolpack Inn a short walk towards Hardnott Pass and King George IV Inn towards Eskdale Green.

We visited this friendly pub a couple of times whilst staying at Bridge End Farm Cottages which are just a hop, skip and a jump away. The food was excellent - hearty, tasty and homemade - exactly what you want when in the Lakes.

I spent last weekend at the Brook House with friends on a walking, eating and drinking trip. The Brook House is ideal for all 3. There some excellent walks nearby and the food and drink are top quality. There's a fine range of local real ales and the evening menu is varied and good value. The breakfast is excellent too with not just the usual full-English on offer. The staff are also very welcoming and friendly. Definitely one of my favourite places to stay in the Lake District.

We ate in this pub last Friday night and were very impressed with the food. The daube of beef was tasty and very tender, the sole was large, fresh and well cooked, however the best was the slow cooked lamb in cider with three fruits which was delicious.

Unfortunately the lunch on the Sunday was a different issue. Although the roast beef was very well cooked the gravy and veg etc lacked taste, as did the beef pie.

That said this pub is top notch in all other aspects. The staff and locals are very friendly and accommodating.

A great selection of beers all well kept. My wife and friend were not too impressed with the wine selection but I was very very impressed with the 150 or so whisky's. Beware though I asked for a shot of 'Port Ellen' but when the barman kindly pointed out that it was £17 odd for a shot I went for a Lagavulin instead. Wise choice.

The pub was very clean and also had plenty of nick knacks etc which made it interesting.

There is a lovely buzz about the Brook House Hotel. If you are ever lucky enough to be in the Boot area I strongly recommend you visit this great traditional country pub.

We stayed for one night in May. Lovely inn with a cosy, welcoming bar. The food and local ales were excellent. Room was clean and well fitted out. Perfect place to stay after a long walk in the rain. Would stay here again next time in Eskdale.

We visited Eskdale two years ago and spent many evenings at the Brook House Inn after long walks in the fells. When we returned this year, we were happy to find it still with the friendly atmosphere and amazing food. Well worth a visit.
