I first visited Woodlands in 2005, and have been back on a regular basis over the years ever since. Although Ireby looks miles from anywhere it's not far from keswick, and Cockermouth and handy for Caldbeck and Carlisle. When I first stayed there Judith was front of house and Steve did all the cooking, and they had just recently taken over from the previous owners. On arrival there was cake and tea in the lounge, which was very welcome. The rooms are comfortable with beds you don't want to get out of and a choice of feather (like them!) or hypo allergenic pillows. Shortbread on the tea tray and fresh milk in a flask , better than UHT milk! Evening meals were excellent and plenty to eat. Breakfasts are just as good and set you off well for the day. Over the years I got to know them both well and their highlight was to get the 2 forks or is it 2 stars for their food in a small hotel, which is due to their hard work. Woodlands has a really nice cosy feel to it, very relaxing and the garden at the front early Spring is full of snowdrops or later bluebells and looks beautiful. Unfortunately Steve passed away last year, and Judith is now chief cook, bar person and washer up! Her warmth and friendliness and the comfort at Woodlands is still the same, food is still as good and always plenty of it. If you want a break to unwind for a while then you can do no better than watch the rush hour at Ireby! Thanks Judith and hope to see you later in the year. Hope the Ireby week-end goes well for you.

This is a gem of a hotel, the staff couldn't be lovelier or more obliging and seemed to really want to make our stay as comfortable as possible. My boyfriend and I stayed for two nights for his 30th birthday and found it an idyllic base. The room had a real cosy, country feel, was light and clean with lots of homely touches like a complimentary tea tray complete with real little china tea cups and bowl of chocolates. Our evening meal and breakfasts were spectacular too, there was a great choice and it was plentiful and very tasty with a relaxed friendly service. Even though the location is a little way from the bigger towns, it's only a twenty minute drive to Keswick and not far from Ambleside either.

Room Tip: Just ask, the staff are so helpful

We booked this place as a last minute Getaway for a Couple of days, From the moment I rang to book I got a warm and welcoming Vibe and can happily say we weren't dissapointed When we arrived, lovely cake and tea on arrival and A beautiful Victorian Guesthouse.
As Judith will point out to you it really is in the middle of nowhere but set in a great spot for Cockermouth, Maryport and Keswick only 15 mins drive away.
I would definatley reccomend eating at the guesthouse the food was Gorgeous and served with a personal and friendly manner.
All in all would Rave over this piece of tranquility definatley worth a visit.

This hotel goes the extra mile to ensure guests have a comfortable and relaxing stay, the breakfasts were wonderful (you didn't need lunch) and the evening meal would not have been out of place in the best restaurant. But it was the little things which made the most difference, the room was very clean with quality furnishings and very comfortable beds. Home made shortbread biscuits, chocolates and a range of tea and coffee (replenished each day) added those extra touches to make a memorable and enjoyable stay and very reasonable stay..
