“A Little bit of Heaven on Earth!”
Reviewed 19 January 2012

Overwater Hall has become a very firm favourite with my wife and I having recently returned from another wonderful New Year's Eve houseparty. It is an oasis of calm and the perfect antidote for stress. The staff are the most caring and helpful you will meet anywhere and the owners treat you like one of the family. Food is of the highest quality possible and is consistently a delight to partake of...we always go down to dinner salivating at the prospect of what might be on the menu which exudes thoughtful variation and the very best of ingredients. We cannot wait until we return to what we honestly believe to be our very own 'little bit of heaven on earth'!

Bit confused about some of the previous reviews, at one stage we though people might have reviewed the wrong hotel!

Firstly, the Hotel is a bit remote with no mobile signal (perfect if you want peace and quiet), although they do have free wifi which is handy for emails. You can get a signal at the top of the read (about 200 meters away, if you are really desperate). Having said that, Keswick is a 15 minute drive away, so it is a perfect base for exploring the Lakes.

Inside the décor is tasteful and in keeping with the overall appearance of the Hotel, with plenty of seating areas and in the sitting room, a real coal fire (not a simulated gas one). The Bar is very nice and the dining room is lovely.

Moving on to the Bedroom, we stayed in one of the turret rooms, with a four poster bed and an enormous bathroom with a huge bath and separate shower. The room was spotless with all the usual accessories you would expect such as hairdryer, ironing board, TV, Coffee & Tea, etc. and the bed was very comfortable.

I do have to say that the one thing that puts Overwater Hall ahead of the rest is the dining. It was simply amazing, not only did we have an excellent choice, but the quality, presentation and service was faultless, and I really do mean faultless. I have eaten at many places around the world and Overwater has got to rate in the top 5 for sure.

On a parting note, all of the staff were very relaxed, attentive but not overbearing and we truly enjoyed our visit and hope to return again.

A prefect retreat for couples and families, either with or without dogs.

Room Tip: Four Poster Turret Room is perfect.

Angela, Adrian & Stephen go to great lengths to ensure that their guests have a wonderful stay at Overwater Hall. The hotel is set within stunning grounds, the rooms are spacious and welcoming, the service second to none and the food simply amazing. If you are thinking of spending a few days in the lakes, Overwater Hall would be an excellent choice.

Room Tip: There is an excellent ground floor room for anyone with walking difficulties or with a dog. Rooms 8...

Stephen spotted us unpacking the bags from the car in the wet and came and took them from us.. that's the kind of place it is! It's a beautiful, reasonably remote setting not far from Skiddaw. The Garden room was lovely with little touches like fresh milk and shortbread. Dinner was top drawer food and great service. I think we'll be going back!

Room Tip: Garden room means we saw the red squirrel eating the nuts put our for him/her on a feeder!

Fifth stay at Overwater Hall and I don't know how they do it but it's consistently outstanding.
It's a relatively small hotel having just 11 rooms, but I think this is the key to it all, the owners and staff give such a welcome and first class service that you feel like 'extended family'.
From the moment we arrived, the service was impeccable, from Luke, the Assistant Manager, opening the door to greet us and carry our luggage to the room (rare these days) to the moment we left, nothing was too much trouble.
The Christmas atmosphere is so homely and cosy, eating hot crumpets in front of a roaring fire, sipping bright red Christmas cocktails before dinner and then the food itself - to die for and definitely something that you'd be hard pushed to create at home! SImply amazing.
The housekeeping team obviously take great pride in their work as the rooms are spotless and the bathrooms are gleaming, they whizz in and whizz out transforming the rooms like Christmas fairies!
The website states 'dogs welcome', in some places that means 'dogs accepted' but at Overwater Hall they really are very welcome as our 'outgoing' golden retriever would testify.
You can see why Overwater Hall were voted '6th Best Hotel in the UK' according to Trip Advisor travellers and I know we haven't sampled any of the top 5 but I can't believe that they can be any better than this.
Stephen, Angela and Adrian, together with their team really have come up with the winning formula - sheer heaven!

Room Tip: Room 6 is one of the turret rooms overlooking the front and side of the building. Red squirrels and...

We arrived early in the afternoon having driven through very poor weather. Welcomed by the wonderful Angela who said that the room was not quite ready. Angela brought us tea in the lounge and while we were drinking this proceeded surrepticiously to take our luggage up to the room.Room 6 four poster bed lots of windows and lovely furniture, great view out from the front of the hotel Dinner in the evening was the usual impeccable standard and the pre dinner drinks and canapes served in the bar by, on this occasion, Stephen were excellent. All the bathrooms in the hotel are large and have fabulous overhead showers and baths.
Breakfast in the morning all excellent and the service great. A hotel run by the owners for the complete benefit of their customers.
Christmas decorations very tasteful without being obtrusive. If you like peace and isolation with fabulous food and service try it you will not be disappointed. If you are looking for excitement pass it by.

Room Tip: THe best rooms are 3 and 6 then 5 room 1 is great value

We went to dinner at Overwater and were utterly impressed. The service was impeccable, really traditional with drinks in the drawing room first and canapés. The hotel owner greeted us at the door and took our order. The food was absolutely perfect, the best meal I have had in quite some time - I would recommend the Mallard if you are visiting soon.
The wine selection was varied, and we chose an excellent Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon, which complemented our red meats well.
We are hoping to return to Bassenthwaite to stay at Overwater as it really was a fantastic evening.
