“Overwater Hall - Jewell in the north”
Reviewed 27 April 2013

We stayed as a family group – gathering eight of us in total, from 22 to 86 years old – at Overwater Hall from Friday night through to Monday morning. None of us wanted to leave! A perfect break, tucked away amongst the trees out of the wind in stunning surroundings, looked after with careful attention to every detail by Angela, Stephen, Luke and the other excellent staff. Polite friendliness is a difficult balance to achieve, but the Overwater Hall team succeed superbly. Not once did anyone hover, yet there was always miraculously someone on hand to provide our every need.
From the classic elegance of the rooms – all different, all with character, comfort and views of the Lakeland scenery, some like our bedroom (Room 2) with separate seating alcoves looking out over the hills, and spacious bathrooms – through the garden walks, back to tea in the lounge and superb cuisine in the evening, it was faultless. Red squirrels raid the hazelnut boxes strategically placed outside the lounge windows and front door, and deer can be glimpsed in the garden copses. Early morning walks down to nearby Overwater Lake, or over the fields, raised the appetite to ensure full enjoyment of the excellent, locally sourced breakfast, then more exercise during the day justified the beautifully presented evening meals in the elegant dining room, the menus at each meal having just the right level of choice. Truly a gem of a discovery, and we can’t wait to have an opportunity to return. We cannot recommend this hotel more highly.
In the visitors’ book we were genuinely able to write “Simply perfect”.

Quality of accommodation and service are excellent. Meals also superb although we found the four course dinner a bit much to eat. The icing on the cake was the abundant birdlife and the evening visits from red squirrels. Very relaxing spot away from everything but if you do want to dine out there are several good places within a few miles and a good choice of real ales.

Room Tip: The garden room if you cannot manage stairs - also has the bonus of a veranda visited by the local w...

We have just returned from a 2 day break at Overwater Hall to celebrate our anniversary, we booked this hotel having read the tripadvisor reviews, as such there is little more that we can add, everything about this hotel is superb from the greeting we received from Angela who met us on the steps and showed us to our room, the excellent cooking from Adrian and the attentive service from the rest of the staff especially Stephen, we have had a fantastic time. The room was spotless, we had the turret room (6) which looked out over the garden and the bathroom was lovely with both shower and bath, the little extras that were provided, flowers, fruit and fruit liqueur all add to the overall attention to detail that makes a place special.
You will have to go along way to find a hotel any better than this, we arrived home rested and relaxed, we only wished we could stay longer to sample even more of the culinary delights that were on the menu
Thank you all very much we will return

Room Tip: All rooms lovely if you want a view the ones overlooking the front are great, the turret rooms 3 and...

We have just returned from a fantastic three night break at Overwater Hall. From the minute we arrived, when Stephen helped us with our bags - the service was outstanding. We had room 5 (superior)- a lovely big room with plenty of space for us and our two Labradors ( we are pleased that the previous reviewer thought they were well behaved!). The rooms come with lots of finishing touches - fresh flowers and fruit, a liqueur nightcap, fluffy bathrobes and televisions with CD and IPod docking facilities. The bathrooms are enormous with lovely big baths and separate showers. On our third night, we stayed in room 7 ( junior) as we made the decision last minute to stay an extra night. Although smaller ( different category of room) there was still space for all of us! This room has lovely views out over the forest.
Adrian's cooking surpassed our expectations with delights such as crab risotto, a medley of fish/ seafood which included scallop, prawn, mullet, pork cooked three way - I wish now I had made a note of all that we ate as I can't do it justice here! Breakfast was again excellent.
The hotel was nearly full when we stayed and the atmosphere was lovely. As a pre dinner drink, try one of Luke's cocktails/ mocktails!
The grounds are lovely and the board walk is a perfect place for a morning walk - with or without dogs! If you do have dogs, then they will be in doggy heaven.
We will be back!

The meal I had was as follows
Cream Risotto of Solway Crab with Marscapone and a mild English Mustard 10/10
Pan fried King Scallops, John Dory, King Prawn, Monkfish and Red Mullet on a Tomato and Fennel sauce 10/10
Pear Creme Brulee with Pink Grapefruit Marmalade Ice Cream 11/10
Service impeccable with a bottle of Spanish white wine.
The hotel and dining room were full.
Three sets of guests had dogs with them. They were all perfectly behaved. If you like dogs you will love Overwater. If you are not fond of dogs they will not cause you any problems.

I have been to many hotels in many countries. None have better service. None have better food. No one else has Adrian

All the rooms are excellent. 3 and 6 have great views

Thank you to Angela, Adrian and Stephen

Room Tip: If you do not like stairs the Garden Room is for you

Everything the other reviewers say is true. The break was for a special birthday at the beginning of March, even the Lake District Weather was at its sunny best. I was unaware of the hotel being dog friendly and to be quite honest if I had known this I would not have booked. To reiterate what has previously been said, other than the occasional dog being walked in the grounds there was no evidence of them and this would certainly not put me off staying again. Food, and service were excellent, and all the extra touches in the rooms made for a memorable stay. The only downside for me was the lack of atmosphere in the evening after the meal, however I would think that under normal circumstances with a higher guest occupancy this would not be the case.
If you are looking for a relaxing, stress free break with superb food and accommodation set in superb walking country you have just found it.

Yet again a superb short break at Overwater. The usual high standard of care and attention to detail, food to die for, and for mid March fantastic weather. All the better to enjoy the grounds and views, cold, crisp, dry and bright blue skies. Arrived home rested and relaxed. Turret room spacious and comfortable with the usual lovely bathroom.

Room Tip: Any room, they don't have a bad one.
