“As excellent as ever”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2014

We haven't stayed in Overwater for a couple of years but friends who were staying invited us for dinner on Friday and Saturday and we were delighted to find that the food is as good as ever. The presentation of every course was just about perfect and every mouthful was savoured. The fixed price menu is excellent value, the staff are very pleasant and the hotel and grounds are just so relaxing. Overwater is a gem and we'll hope to be back very soon.

Room Tip: If you have a dog, particularly one who isn't too keen on other dogs, the garden room is perfect...

We dined with friends on 13th June. Every time we go the food and service is wonderful but this time it was extra special! The venison with puy lentils and dark chocolate sauce was absolutely delicious. We all really enjoyed the puds - particularly yummy lavender ice cream! I look forward to the next visit. If you haven't been yet, go!

Have been coming to Overwater for more than 20 years and it is always such an enjoyable holiday. The food this time seemed to be better than ever and the three guests who joined me were very impressed, and two of them were visitors from the south of England. Staff are excellent, service is great what more is there to say - apart from the fact that dogs are very welcome!
The only problem in most parts of the Lake District is the very slow, if at all, internet connection and problems with mobile phones. But that applies to everyone - businesses as well as visitors.

Room Tip: Try room 2 - large bathroom and small sitting room with glorious view.

My wife, 2 dogs and I spent a long weekend at Overwater Hall last week. We just thought it was fantastic. The three senior staff (managers? owners?) have been there for 20 years and they have the art of making you feel at home down to a tee. Friendly, helpful, polite. Wonderful.
A review on Tripadvisor suggested the Garden Room if you have dogs - this is a great tip as you effectively have your own entrance for late night and early morning walks. The room was great and the bed enormous. My wife said it was like sleeping in a cloud.
The grounds are superb - 18 acres of managed woodland plus some formal gardens. There is a boardwalk through the woodland, again perfect for the dogs.
The food is very high quality indeed. My wife and I have very high standards when it comes to food and we were pleasantly surprised. Close to Michelin star standards I would have said. A starter of calves livers was the highlight for me.
So that's the good bits. On the downside, the price - its not cheap - but you get what you pay for and we will happily return. The cooked breakfast was a bit patchy - excellent bacon and sausage, but the scrambled eggs were stacked in a mould. You shouldn't be able to stack scrambled eggs !
But this is an incredibly mean comment when everything else was so good.
As my French wife said "on peut revenir" - "we'll be back".

Room Tip: garden room for dogs

A wonderful country house hotel. Great service, rooms and food. The hotel is some way off the main road and you need to be prepared to drive on country lanes. The hotel gives easy access to Kendall and the northern lakes as well as Carlisle and the borders. The hotel is a must if you intend to travel in west Cumberland where good hotels are hard to find.

Room Tip: All three hotels used by my family were excellent

After arranging a weekend to surprise my Dad, all was kept hush and certainly surprised him. He absolutely loved it, as did we all. A fantastic weekend of luxurious food and standards, excellent quality with everything, including the amazing fruit liqueur left as a night cap in the room; beautiful, along with fantastic cocktails and of course the award winning desserts. Wow! Immaculate setting and hospitality. Perfect.
Thank you for every thing.

We stayed at this hotel last October and posted a review of it then. Having returned in May this year we again found it to be outstanding - the welcome we received on arrival, the hospitality we received throughout our stay (extending to fresh fruit, fresh flowers, delicious home baked shortbread, and home made fruit liqueur for a complimentary nightcap in the bedroom), the standard of quietly efficient but friendly service, the standard of our room, and lastly - but by no means least! - the quality and taste of the food which we can only describe as superb. We are already planning to go back and would recommend this hotel to anyone planning a stay in the Lakes.

Room Tip: We have stayed in Room 5 and the Garden Room both of which were excellent and have seen Rooms 3 and...
