Our third time here and very pleased again. It's not the cheapest place to stay, however the quality of the service and the location compensate for this.
It's a lovely atmosphere, sat on an afternoon on the terrace with a couple of drinks is heaven !
Food great, staff attentive and friendly. Will go again

Pros: Location is supposed to be the attraction for this hotel located at the southwest end of Lake Windermere. The views are a photographer's paradise and it is literally 100 yards from the Aquarium of the Lakes, the Lakeside & Haverthwaite (steam) Railway and lake cruises. However the true plus of this establishment are its people. They are totally competent and exceedingly friendly. The employees make the trip worth while.

Cons: For someone without a car you are in the middle of no where. Evening meals were more formal and heavier than I would have wished. I frequently just desire to grab a sandwich and a coke at a local Tesco or Sainsbury and eat in my room. Without a car there are no local supermarkets.

August Bank Holiday weekend. This was our first trip away...with our newborn (3 weeks old). The welcome was very warm and helpful regarding our evening meal (it was about 20.20 when we arrived on the Saturday). The room was comfortable and well equipped although the whole hotel has a bit of an ageing decor theme - would recommend a refresh but not lose the country house feeling. We just felt that since we were paying five star price, that everything about the experience should be above reproach. If this review was based solely on the Saturday dining experience, it would be significantly less complimentary than if based on the Sunday night meal. On Saturday, we both had the smoked salmon starter, pork main (the menu stated crackling was included yet it was absent from both of our plates) and cheese dessert. We felt that this meal was overpriced and portions were tiny. The £65 bottle of wine was however, worth the money! Different story on Sunday evening. Pigeon starter, chateaubriand and lemon tart: all exquisitely presented, tasted sensational and well worth the money. I couldn't praise the staff, chef and food highly enough on the Sunday evening experience. Throughout the whole stay, the staff were all very helpful, polite and pleasant and made our visit really relaxed with our new addition.

Been here 5 times, spa good, breakfast brilliant, dinner- hit or a miss, mostly a hit. Staff attentive, rooms again okay, starting to look a bit dated. Very pricy - for two nights you could probably go abroad. We tend to only stay 2 nights at a time on the way to Scotland, and always enjoy staying.
Will keep returning, mainly for the pool and spa.

Room Tip: Visit cafe by the ferry- good keep you warm food.

This hotel has much to recommend it - but also suffers from the familiar flaws of so many British hotels with ideas above their station...

The pluses - plenty of staff, porterage appears unbidden, valet parking. Our group dinner was raved about by all in attendance. Location is lovely. Most staff are very pleasant and helpful. Good (hotel) pool.

The minuses - ludicrously overpriced, both accommodation and food/drink. Yes, of course you expect to get stung by hotel prices but it appears to be an artform here. Rooms will be a disappointment to the well-travelled, the marketing and pricing are out of kilter with average-sized, averagely-equipped rooms. As noted above, most staff are great but there are a small number (you know the ones, it'll be those who've been given 'senior' in their job title) who appear to see it as their duty to be humourless, graceless and generally appear to be catering a funeral. Drinks/coffee service is spectacularly slow.

It's a lovely part of the world, a really nice hotel building, and you will eat well, but it is not as good as its prices. We had a great time because we were in a large family group, and each others' company was the point of the visit - I suspect if you visited here solo or in a couple, you would leave feeling slightly disappointed (and much poorer).

On arriving at the hotel we had high hopes as the welcome was great, however it was down hill all the way after that when we checked into our double room (priced at £540.00 for 3 nights b&b) to find that you could not swing a cat ,when i dared to complain the attitude was terrible, heres a summary of what was good and bad about the place.
well decorated rooms
comfy beds
lovely views from conservatory
terrible service from resturant staff (the woman who served us breakfast had the worst attitude ever)
average food at above average prices
stale sandwiches at lunch time (we all actually ended up laughing it was so bad)
no atmosphere at all anywhere in the hotel
no staff at the spa at all over the 3 days we stayed
tiny room, ended up paying an exte £150.00 for a bigger room
very dissapointing expected better, when you see a sandwich priced at £7.00 on the menu you expect a little more than 2 slices of stale bread with one slice of dried out ham in the middle, served on a little tea plate.
I would recomend the Swan instead, we were forced to eat there because the food at the Lakeside was so bad, simmilar prices but amazing food and service.

My Father in Law wanted to treat us to a few days in the Lake District and having been grossly miss treated by another Hotel in the area chose the Lakeside. First impressions were good, although the parking for elderly couples is a problem with certainly no complimentary disabled parking close to the Hotel during the day time. The hotel porter will park your car for you but it is a good way behind the 'ferry' terminal which is adjacent to the Hotel.
On the whole we found the staff a little patronising in their efforts with one exception. The restaurant food was good and well-presented but when you are staying for more than one night I think they should have a different 'special' on the menu.
The supplement for a steak is a little outrageous and we decided not to pay this, although on the second night we were told by a fabulous lady restaurant manager that we could have the Ruskin menu in the lake View dining room which included the steak without the supplement, well that was until we checked out and the reception staff initially insisted that the supplement was due although it did not state this on the 'Ruskin' menu which is displayed in the hall way. They did eventual relent but did not apologise.
Getting served in the garden for drinks is a real test of patience; need some better man management to oversee the young staff members.
On the whole a little disappointing and such a shame as they have the ideal location.

Room Tip: it has to be a lake view in the original building.
