“Fantastic Staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2009

Just come back from Lakeside and had a wonderful experience. A Lakeview room with a wonderful outlook across Windermere. The hotel staff are probably the best we have ever had the pleasure of dealing with and nothing s too much. It may be expensive but true quality makes this hotel value for money. Many thanks to everybody for such a great relaxing weekend.

My wife and I needed somewhere to stay on our way back home from Glasgow. I emailed a few hotels in the morning and the Lakeside whilst not the cheapest sounded the best and also offered some additional deciding factors.

These were, a Pool and Spa, dinner served until 10.00 pm and breakfast served until 11.00 am.

So may hotels stop serving dinner too early and you end up rushing and the same applies to beakfast. Not everybody wants to eat breakfast at 7.30 am especially if you are trying to chill for the day.

There are a few things that make this hotel stand out leagues above others.

1 - The staff are so incredibly helpful and nothing is too much trouble.

2 - The food in the restaurant is absolutely fantastic. If you are looking for a cheap restaurant look elsewhere as our meal for two with a bottle of wine was £110, but in my opinion it was acceptable for the quality and you could tell that the chef took real pride in his/her work.

3 - Stunning views over the lake

4- wonderful leisure facilities

So there you have it. I will definately stay again and I am looking for an excuse to travel to that area again soon.

Breakfast was also superb as expected.

My only comment is that I wanted to log onto the internet on my laptop to check my emails but found out that there is a charge to use it. I think in this day and age, wireless internet should be complimentary in all hotels as it is now pretty much an essential part of life. Only a small point which in no way detratcts form our stay at this wonderful Hotel.

Many thanks for a short but lovely stay.

Husband and I went for a long weekend here last weekend as a little treat and for some rest and relaxation. The rate for our room (a Lakeview Terrace room) for the 2 nights was £710 B&B. Using the hotel's "last minute deals" facility we got it for £300. To be honest, if we had paid more than £300 I would not have been happy. The hotel is lovely, but generally overpriced in my opinion. Our Lakeview room was nice, featuring traditional decor and a super kingsize bed. We really enjoyed the spa facilities and both had wonderful treatments from the excellent therapists (not included in rate). The hotel breakfast was the best I remember ever having anywhere - absolutely delicious. We dined at the hotel on one night and it cost £94 for one starter, two mains, one dessert and 2 glasses of wine. Although the food was good, it was very expensive and no better than we have enjoyed in many more reasonably priced good restaurants. Our favourite part of the hotel was the open fires in the lobby and pub. It was bitterly cold whilst we were there and we really enjoyed snuggling up next to the fire with drinks and books. We also wrapped up warm for a walk around Lake Windermere. On our second night we dined out at The Swan (very close 4* hotel) and the food there was very good. We drove to The Swan, but apparently the hotel has a shuttle bus which they use to ferry guests to nearby pubs and hotels. Overall, we had a lovely and very relaxing break. We would definitely return to the Lakeside, but only if we could get a room at a special rate rather than the hotel's full rate.

We had the misfortune of booking a weekend break at Lakeside, thinking it would be a nice break before christmas. How wrong can you be!. Amongst other things, we looked forward to the fine dining, which we have previously enjoyed at this hotel, only to be confronted on Saturday evening with a dinner dance. The food, when it finally arrived, was to put it mildly - awful. It was nearly cold and the portions miniscule. Having previously enjoyed sitting in the conservatory with a pre-dinner drink and canapes, whilst perusing the extensive menu at our leisure, we found that this was not an option, we were ushered to our table to make our choice from a menu with a meagre selection. After our meal we retired to our room to eat the complimentary biscuits to top up a very disappointing meal. All in all this was an expensive weekend without the usual fine dining we have previously experienced at Lakeside.

I've been to the Lake District almost every year for the last 28 years. Almost every year my extended family and I have stayed at the Lodore hotel, but the service went steadily downhill there over the years and so in 2008 we booked the Lakeside hotel.

What a great idea. It's not a cheap hotel, but the service really is spot on at the Lakeside. The staff are all switched on and attended to our group of 10 very well throughout the weekend. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us. The food was also very good - in both of the restaurants.

The setting is also great - right on the lake. I'm not sure how room categories work - my advice would be to try to get one with a little porch on the ground floor that looks down onto the lake.

I think I've persuaded my Granny that this should be our choice of hotel in the Lake District. It's a very good hotel. I even saw Rio Ferdinand (ie. England football player / sometimes captain) having lunch with his wife and kid there on the Sunday. The guy has good taste.

  • Liked — It's location & service
  • Disliked — Lake Windermere isn't Cumbria's most beautiful lake

Really lovely location on the lake and thats the best thing about this hotel. A lake view room really has a beautiful view. Which is a shame that the rest of the experience does not live up to this.

The hotel has spa facilities; pool, steam room and sauna but these are spoilt by the fact that the pool was over run with young children during our 3 night stay at all times. The pool area is open from 7am until 7pm, ideally it would be useful for the management to have children only times for the pool so that adults can relax, as they do market this hotel as a relaxing experience. The facilities are nice but not really that special more 3 star than 4 star. The spa girls are very nice and give very good treatments.

With so many children in the hotel this makes dining in the John Ruskins restaurant an unpleasant experience, you would not expect to pay such prices and have children screaming and crying in the restaurant. There is only two restaurants in the hotel the fine dining and the John Ruskins which is almost as expensive as the fine dining experience. Again there should be times when you can take the children in so that adults can have a choice to have a child free dinner.

The hotel has a mix of old and new areas and the hotel corridors are very noisy and all night long we were woken by people walking up and down the corridors and opening and closing doors. We were also below a family room and could hear everything. Soundproofing is required. Do not get a room close to the elevators or close to main reception areas, ask for a room as far away from all the noise and take ear plugs! The TV in the rooms are ancient. We had paid for one of the expensive lake-view rooms which needs some modernisation and were small compared to the price we had paid.

The hotel has some lovely touches, fresh flowers everywhere, hildon water in the room, molton brown toiletries but this does not a 4 star hotel make - please concentrate on the hotel accommodation, the noise levels, appealing to all customers - child free pool and dinner times.

Overall we were disappointed with the experience and left our stay earlier than we had booked as we wanted a relaxing weekend in a beautiful location. Shame because the location was lovely
