“Relaxing hotel with perfect service in a friendly environment”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 October 2011

Spent a wonderful (if rainy) weekend at the Swan Hotel, Newby Bridge recently. We couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Highlights were;
- wonderful food, beautifully presented and supremely delicious - especially try the nutella and marscapone calzone!
- beautiful spa pool and ESPA treatment suite. Definitely need to book treatments in advance as they seem quite busy at weekends.
- the snug. Perfect for a post dinner drink.
- decor. tastefully decorated with a combination of contempory and kitsch.

I'm sure it would be great in warmer weather too with a riverside eating area.

Well located for the southern lakes, about ten mins drive to Ambleside.

What impressed us most however was the level of service that we received all weekend. Understated, attentive and friendly. It was high end hotel service in what felt like a much smaller boutique hotel.

Room Tip: Room 14 overlooks the river and is fab.

Stayed on a Thursday night as part of a small conference with colleagues.
Great Hotel. Staff lovely, polite and efficient. English was perfect. Nothing too much trouble.
Food superb. We had far too much and it was all home cooked and beautifully presented. Restaurant lovely. We were in a space called the scullery which was like private dining!
Bacon Barms on arrival were massive. Buffet lunch was fish and chips or gammon or sandwiches. My colleagues tended to eat all choices! Bakewell tart to die for.
Breakfast superb. Great choice and massively better than the usual self-service chain hotel rubbish. Colleagues had the scrambled eggs, smoked salmon spinach etc.. and it was all great. My cooked breakfast was cooked to order and featured local quality ingredients.
Bar was brill. Real ale superb and prices cheap for a posh Lakes hotel. The Langdale Bitter was crystal and slipped down smoothly!
Bedroom was beautifully finished and totally practical. TV excellent linked to IT and IPOd docking station lamp a great idea. Bathroom superbly finished and designed with separate lights over the mirror that didn't set off extractor fan. Toilet flush behind seat but this was a soft closer: again superb attention to detail. Bed massive and comfy. I was in a back room but lovely view over the garden and the hill.
Conference facilities again excellent. Coffee tasted lovely and scones for afternoon tea were homemade and massive.
Leisure facilities spotless and pool and gym great. Again staff were brilliant.
It was so good we rebooked our conference for next year there and then. Best Value is very close to our hearts. It was only slightly dearer than a chain hotel across the road. The two did not compare. We were much more productive here.
I am definitely going to take the missus there. This place is great for the Lakes and knocks spots of many posher, snootier hotels. It could be a 5 star in my opinion.
Well done to all staff and management. A great experience. Sorry but I didn't have time to fill in your own evaluation.

Room Tip: Try and get a river view room

Arrived Saturday afternoon, check in ok even with a wedding on that day. We had a room overlooking the garden at back, pleasant enough but lacking some character. Bed linen of good quality and bathroom good although I dislike the large containers of shampoo, soap ect that they fill up. Dinner was good, breakfast better. Used the baths and sauna which was empty. Its a large busy hotel and overall got most things right

Stunning and contemporary hotel set in an Idyllic location. Always receive a warm and friendly welcome. We pre- booked SPA treatments, neck and shoulder massage for the hubby and manicure by Helen - perfect. We had lunch in the Swan Inn, with excellent cask ales (never disappointed) followed by evening diner in the River Room, food was excellent and good portions. We then retired to the Ballroom upstairs and relaxed in the comfy chairs and admired the gorgeous deco. We had a elderly relative with us and she was very well looked after and the room service was above and beyond, assisting her with the air con! Already looking forward to my next visit. Our two year old was left a big box of building blocks to play with on his bed, the room 308 was at the back of the hotel looking onto the vast moutains and of course the steam train railway, much to the delight of our little boy!!

Room Tip: Having stayed at the front and the back of the hotel, all the views are lovely. Book your SPA treat...

This is the first time I have ever felt strongly enough to write a review. I have just returned home from a lunch with friends at this hotel. We were a party of 7 and even though the bar was virtually deserted when we asked for a table for 7 were told to move tables together ourselves. We then asked to order and were told that we could only do this at the bar paying as we went along. The food was finally brought to our table, delivered in a very slapdash manner and when we asked for some drinks with our food were told that yet again we could only get this from the bar! The place was by now empty. Why be so unhelpful?

First review I have ever written but due to no response to email and mail feedback to hotel thought I would express my dissatisfaction over our stay there August Bank holiday 2011. The website marketing features 'child friendly' and we did find the River Bar and lounge areas excellent for children but we had a few problems elsewhere. We were given a travel cot for our toddler with no comfort mattress - very hard base that had to be padded out with towels. We weren't told there was a nappy disposal bin available (even after taking a used nappy to reception). Our room wasn't cleaned on Bank Holiday Monday so we came back to smelly bathroom (oh those used nappies do tend to smell). Did someone say cookies and milk were on offer for kiddies - we didn't see anything of that. Nice looking hotel but feel quite cheated to pay so much money for no cleaning service and then not to receive a reply to a complaint. Won't be back there again. This trip was a special celebration for us and it was marred by the problems .. we have stayed in many hotels but never known no cleaning service!

I am the General manager of the Swan Hotel and have in response to this review contacted Eileen P as I am particularly concerned that her experience does not live up to our usual standard. I have not until this posting received any correspondence regarding this matter.
