Booked as part of a 40th birthday present for my husband we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The public areas of the hotel are beautiful, fantastic mix of old ( the building is 17th Century) and modern. For the most part the staff were superb, front desk, spa and house-keeping particularly - everyone had a smile and a moment to chat. We had a Deluxe room with ample space for the rollaway bed for our 7 year old and we had a front facing room with beautiful river views. The hotel is however on a road junction, which was busier than anticipated and whilst not a major problem for us we were certainly aware of the road noise. We chose to eat in the Swan Inn rather than the River Room on both evenings although the menu is the same for both and whilst the food was good we were not blown away by it, had we been staying for a 3rd night we would have found elsewhere to eat. The staff in the pub sadly were not as welcoming as elsewhere in the hotel and just needed to smile a little more, whilst all were perfectly polite for a few of them it all seemed be a little to hard. A request for a side plate was deemed to involve a great deal of effort and even when being served at the bar the friendly smiles and warm approach evident elsewhere in the hotel were missing. On the Friday evening we were served by a member of staff who took every opportunity to tell us how ill she was feeling and then moaned at us for the remainder of our time there. We sympathised but ultimately this was not what we wanted to encounter during our evening. Ultimately we loved the hotel, the location is right on the Southern tip on Windermere where the scenery is beautiful but more gentle than heading further north. Lakeside is a 5 minute drive away and ferries cover all points of the lake from here, the rest of the National Park is easily accessible too. The majority of the staff were excellent, just one or two of them perhaps need to take note of how it should be done.

Room Tip: River facing rooms have a lovely view however there may be some road noise.

We stopped here for Sunday lunch in The River Room restaurant. Excellent service, probably the best roast beef we've had in a long time. The whole dining experience was top notch! My 10 yr old son even asked the waiter to complement the chef he couldn't stop raving about it.

My husband and I have just returned from a fantastic two night stay at this hotel and spa, and what can I say, it ticked all the boxes for us. From an exhausted husband who has been working away in America, to a tired Mummy of 3 year old twins and two very energetic little girls, it couldn't have been more perfect!

The Beatrix and Potter suites are ideal for families as they have interconnecting rooms with a bathroom in-between and beautifully decorated with a dolls house in the room, lovely and thoughtful touch. The children were brought milk and cookies at bedtime (the twins highlight of the holiday!) and couldn't have made to feel more welcome. The baby listening service works brilliantly and is a great way for parents to enjoy supper on their own in the safe knowledge that the little ones are tucked up in bed.

We were lucky enough to have wonderful weather for the Easter weekend so we walked to nearly Lakeside (about a mile from the hotel) and took the boat to Bowness where we hired a speed boat on Windermere which was great fun and a lovely way to enjoy the Lake; again great for little ones as the speed limit is 4 miles an hour!

Returning back to the hotel we caught the steam train from Lakeside and it stops just next to Newby Bridge so a lovely experience on a sunny day.

As the hotel is on the river it is perfect for enjoying lunch and a glass of wine in the sunshine whilst the children watch the swans and ducks swim by, just delightful.

Our experience of the spa was excellent with a relaxing ambience, indulging treatments -thoroughly spoiling! The pool area is lovely and whilst we didn't use the gym, looked well equipped.

I never usually have the time to write a Tripadvisor review but I felt I had to in this instance. Overall this hotel has managed successfully to create the balance between a stylish hotel that feels like a real treat for parents whilst making the children feel so welcome and included. We will definitely be returning and already dreaming of our next weekend break there!

Room Tip: Beatrix and Potter suite - perfect for families

Both myself and my partner visited the spa. Treatments were well priced rooms were exceptional and modern. All equipment was modern and spa staff were very competent. Lovely view over the river. I would return tomorrow can't comment on hotel as we didn't stay here.

Stopped by for dinner last night in the bar restaurant. Staff were friendly, and advised a 20minute wait for meals. Fair enough. However 1 HOUR later the food finally arrived - at least 3 of our four ordered meals. The 4th had been forgotten. The staff did a good job at recovery (free desert), but with two young and tired children this was too little, too late. We could tell from the faces on other tables that we were not the only ones enduring excessive waits. Poor.

My wife and I stopped here by chance, as weary and disabled visitors looking constantly in vain for restaurants with nearby free parking on Lake Windermere. It's one of the very few such places, at the bottom of the lake. From the outside it looked very attractive, on the waterside and we had high hopes of a good meal. But we were terribly disappointed. Food took well over half an hour to arrive, we didn't get what we ordered and we could have gotten a far better and far less expensive meal had we not been on grossly over-rated and grossly over-priced Lake Windermere. We would not recommend this to anyone as a good place to stay or eat, instead head many miles away to Windermere or Boness-on-Windermere.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere

We stayed here for our 'mini moon' at the beginning of March. The hotel and spa were very good but it was let down by the bar and restaurant. There were always lots of staff behind the bar but it took a while to get served, we had to wait a couple of times whilst people who had arrived after us got served as nobody bothered finding out or noticing who was next. Service in the restaurant could have been slicker too.
On the tables in the bar they were also advertising 'stay one night and get one free in March'. Whilst we didn't expect to have this applied to our stay it was a bit frustrating to have to look at whilst trying to relax and enjoy a drink!
