“Wonderful setting, delicious dinner but children's menu poor”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

We were blessed with a fantastic week of sunshine in the Lake District and chose the Swan for an early evening meal. We all agreed there was nowhere else we'd rather be right then. The riverside seating at dusk was simply beautiful. The hotel is beautifully furnished for those that preferred to sit inside.

The menu is mainly British fayre but is varied. Something for everyone! We enjoyed the seafood platter, a pork fillet special, sea bream and pork belly with empty plates all round. The desserts were also a hit with the lavendar creme brulee causing the most 'food envy'. Those who chose the Eton Mess found it disappointingly cream heavy and hard to manage.

I would very much like to go back to the Swan and would be very keen to stay as the hotel looks wonderful and the pool behind reception very inviting.

My main disappointment lies around the children's menu, so much so that I fed my two year old from our plates rather than getting his own. All through the website the hotel prides itself on being family friendly. In my mind, friendly does not need to equate to 'everything with chips'. I would expect an eating establishment of this calibre to offer more than chicken goujons and chips, burger and chips and fish finger and chips. One option was a jam sandwich. Is that actually a foodstuff? My little boy enjoyed his olives, smoked trout, potatoes and spinach. Please, please, please consider just doing smaller portions of adult food. Perhaps have a look at www.betterchildrensmenus.co.uk

That's my negative over. All in all we would definitely like to return.

WE loved our stay at the swan from start to finish. The hotel was recommended to us by a friend otherwise I'm not sure we would have found this hotel. We arrived and because our room was not suitable for us we were upgraded to a suite. We enjoyed cocktails at the bar and a lovely meal. The staff were exceptional from those at the desk checking us in to the service in the bar. A wedding was going on at the same time and this did not impact on our visit which was impressive as the place was so busy. Stephen (I think was his name) the porter and does every job within the hotel went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our stay. We are defiantly looking forwards to returning to the swan hotel.

Beautiful setting - beautiful weather! It was a beautiful sunny afternoon - so we thought that we have a cup of tea and a cake beside the river. Setting wonderful, tea - pathetic weak pot of tea for two, even though we lot it brew for a good seven minutes ( I always thought that Cumbrians produced a "good cup of tea" - this was dishwater). No cake! However the scones were delicious, far too much cream, but jam ( my partner felt a too small portion) and butter wonderful. If the tea had been better ( what about a jug of hot water for those who like dishwater?) it might have been worth the £12.20 for 2 teas and 2 scones.

The setting for this Hotel is stunning and the Hotel is excellent also. Very picturesque with masonary arch bridge leading to the Hotel on the banks of Windermere. The outdoor terrace overtlooking the water was particularly nice.
The staff were excellent as was the swimming pool, restaurant, plus all facilities. The bedroom room was clean, tidy, and had everything you would expect from a Hotel of the standard. The suite was a little small, but had excellent views over the gardens and water.
The restaurant and bar food choice / quality was very good.

If you are looking for a quality Hotel in lovely surroundings, that serves excellent food - then book this Hotel.

Negatives - size of room for a suite was poor
Overflow car park is a long way from reception - when it is pouring down with rain

I would definately recommend and will definately be returning

Room Tip: Ask for room overlooking water

Called for lunch with some Italian visitors on our way to Barrow for a business meeting. The location of the hotel is ideal and the food served was good, but the attitude of the senior person in the restaurant / bar was unpleasant to say the least. He was the only one showing attitude to the customers; the others were helpful. If he cannot suffer the public he is in the wrong job. In the lake district there is an abundance of eating places and customers have a choice. I for one will chose to go elsewhere.
I have given a 'poor' rating to service although the other members of staff were good.

Stopped in for a few drinks and a bite to eat on Friday night on the way to a wedding. Staff and kitchen clearly unable to cope. 2 hour wait for a main course. Want a burger cooked medium, forget it, we only do burgers well done, they said. The burger was more than well done. Better options in the lakes. Pity as it is a pleasant location.

After reading a few of the reviews prior to our stay, we were a bit wary to say the least. We had a 3 night stay and chose to eat in the Hotel Bar or restaurant every night as the food was superb. A little pricey but we decided to treat ourselves. We found the Swan to be a very clean boutique style lovely place to stay. The staff were very friendly, I think if you treat them with respect, you get the same back. If you were to go in school summer holidays, I imagine there would be a lot of children there as it does cater for families. There were mostly couples there for us, ideal as it was a break for us! We would definitely go back again.

Room Tip: Deluxe rooms on the river side have a lovely view.
