We were blessed with a fantastic week of sunshine in the Lake District and chose the Swan for an early evening meal. We all agreed there was nowhere else we'd rather be right then. The riverside seating at dusk was simply beautiful. The hotel is beautifully furnished for those that preferred to sit inside.
The menu is mainly British fayre but is varied. Something for everyone! We enjoyed the seafood platter, a pork fillet special, sea bream and pork belly with empty plates all round. The desserts were also a hit with the lavendar creme brulee causing the most 'food envy'. Those who chose the Eton Mess found it disappointingly cream heavy and hard to manage.
I would very much like to go back to the Swan and would be very keen to stay as the hotel looks wonderful and the pool behind reception very inviting.
My main disappointment lies around the children's menu, so much so that I fed my two year old from our plates rather than getting his own. All through the website the hotel prides itself on being family friendly. In my mind, friendly does not need to equate to 'everything with chips'. I would expect an eating establishment of this calibre to offer more than chicken goujons and chips, burger and chips and fish finger and chips. One option was a jam sandwich. Is that actually a foodstuff? My little boy enjoyed his olives, smoked trout, potatoes and spinach. Please, please, please consider just doing smaller portions of adult food. Perhaps have a look at www.betterchildrensmenus.co.uk
That's my negative over. All in all we would definitely like to return.
