“Great Hostel”
Reviewed 9 March 2014

We stayed here as part of our field trip to the lake district. It is in an ideal location for hiking or any other outdoor activity.
The staff are very welcoming and helpful. The food is also very good, served in a nicely decorated dining area. The common room boasted lots of space, seating and literature about the local area.
The rooms, in comparison to other hostels are very good, clean and spatious. Each room was provided with a heater so although it was rather cold weather during our visit, it was nice and cosy in our room. The beds are also very comfy and as the area is very quiet, I had a very good nights sleep!

The only thing that I could put the hostel down on is their showers which seem to either be stone cold or scolding hot.

Overall we had a great stay and I would definitely consider staying here again!

Room Tip: All rooms are pretty similar in layout of wooden bunk beds. We stayed in room 10 and had a nice view...

We visited in February 2014 as a walking group of 20+. We found the hostel very good with an excellent lounge and dining area and always a must, plenty of hot water and an effective drying room..Had a minor makeover since my last visit and wash rooms and toilets were improved over what I remembered.

The staff couldn't have been more helpful and the food was both filling and of a high quality. They were waiting for the new chef to start so I look forward to visiting again as he has a lot to live up to. Very well placed for walking with the Helvellyn range on the one side of the Ullswater and High Street on the other and some lower fells with great views.

I visited their with hiking group.
Room was not cleaned with any standard.
This hostel is now close most of the time and only opened if other hostels in Lake districts are full.

I would not recommend at all unless this is the LAST option and that too only single.

Book in! I was here for a few days running in and around Ullswater early November. The hostel is basic but cosy. I booked a lovely small private room (bunk beds and a sink) which was just down the corridor from the well appointed bathroom (with excellent much needed hot showers!). Breakfast was very good and there is a self catering kitchen. The hostel has a lovely atmosphere and although was quite quiet at this time of year felt very friendly.
You're well appointed for some fabulous walks/runs/biking and only a short walk from the excellent White Lion pub (highly recommended with their own ale!) and about 20mins walk from Glenridding.

Do take a torch for your walk back from the pub- the roads aren't lit!

Location wise, this hostel takes some beating.... lots of great walking from the door and a pub just down the road, I didn't need to move my car all week. As many other reviews have said the place has a feeling of neglect which is such a shame. My dorm room wasnt damp, but the carpet was worn and dirty. The bed and bedding were clean and comfortable, and the dorm was quite roomy. The toilet/washroom was a bit of a let down, with black mold and only one shower which is unadjustable for height and only really suitable for a person under 5ft!!! The self catering kitchen was pretty good, but the layout meant getting in the way of other people all the time. The lounge and dining areas were pleasant and a nice place to relax and chat with other residents. I found all the staff to be helpful and friendly. The place just needs some attention, but I fear that the YHA havent got the cash to do it. It would be such a shame if the place gets sold off.

Tried for months to secure lodging for a one night stay on a Friday evening in Patterdale. Have previously stayed at the Old Water View B & B next door, which is excellent. All and sundry were full, only availability was this YHA. Given the previous reviews, reluctantly booked.

I am sad to report that most of what I have read below is true.

This hostel is in dire need of work especially the interior.

Our room, #7, was very damp and musty smelling. The carpets were filthy. The amount of dust underneath the lower bunks was nearly unbelievable. The lighting is extremely poor. The overall feeling of the room, IMHO, was of neglect and lack of cleanliness.

The men's shower room was very clean. The showers are in need of refurbishment but were clean. The water pressure was great and had lots of hot water, however that may have been due to a limited number of guests.

Went out to the White Lion for dinner and beers. Came back to the hostel for an evening of cards and a nightcap.

The breakfast at the hostel was ok.

Perhaps because it was near the end of the summer season, but all the staff I encountered were not very friendly, took offense when I questioned the mustiness of our room and generally seemed to be in dire need of a probably well earned holiday. Our experience here was in direct contrast to our previous night's experience at the YHA in Windermere.

The drying room on the other hand was excellent. Lots of room, hangers and very, very warm. Washer and dryer available. A total bonus after a long, wet day.

All in all, I doubt I would return to this hostel. There is much work to be done here before the YHA can once again be proud of this property.

Room Tip: Until refurbished, I would make all efforts to find a room at a different property. Interesting buil...

Last of 4 in 6 bed dorm so I had to kip on top bunk - don't like that. Shower very low and basic - not very comfortable. Other guests complained some rooms damp but ours was OK. Food edible. Staff friendly. Bike shed secure. Didn't use drying room. Recommendation for hostellers staying here is to eat out or self cater.
