“Ideal position and excellent staff, but bedrooms need updating”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2014

This hostel is in a brilliant position for walkers, as previous entries mention. We were a party of forty and Glen, the warden, could not have been more friendly and helpful, particularly when an unexpected problem arose with one of our students. The rest of the staff were equally helpful, both before arrival with organisation, and during our stay. Personnel are much improved from a similar visit two years ago. The breakfast is very good, whilst the evening meals were a little more variable, but still good value for the price. Most of the bedrooms need a makeover, but clearly funds are tight. The shower rooms were fine by comparison, with plenty of hot water. Very efficient drying room. The two main rooms are very good, particularly with a large group. It would be sad if this hostel were to close.

Having done a Lakes point to point Lake District walking trip over Easter 2013 we decided to follow the same route this year so used Patterdale YHA as the first stop. To my great surprise it was a marked improvement on last year. The food hall had been moved around & the chap on duty was so helpful & friendly. Last year the staff we not so accomodating. There was a party of teenagers in the hostel from Bradford witrh their teachers who insisted that we ate before themselves-a nice touch.

Room Tip: Roon 4 was pretty good

I have just returned from a weekend walking the Eastern Fells, and Patterdale YHA is the place to be. Interesting architecture, lots of space, stunning location and extremely welcoming staff. This will be a regular for our Lake District walking.

We stayed here as part of our field trip to the lake district. It is in an ideal location for hiking or any other outdoor activity.
The staff are very welcoming and helpful. The food is also very good, served in a nicely decorated dining area. The common room boasted lots of space, seating and literature about the local area.
The rooms, in comparison to other hostels are very good, clean and spatious. Each room was provided with a heater so although it was rather cold weather during our visit, it was nice and cosy in our room. The beds are also very comfy and as the area is very quiet, I had a very good nights sleep!

The only thing that I could put the hostel down on is their showers which seem to either be stone cold or scolding hot.

Overall we had a great stay and I would definitely consider staying here again!

Room Tip: All rooms are pretty similar in layout of wooden bunk beds. We stayed in room 10 and had a nice view...

We visited in February 2014 as a walking group of 20+. We found the hostel very good with an excellent lounge and dining area and always a must, plenty of hot water and an effective drying room..Had a minor makeover since my last visit and wash rooms and toilets were improved over what I remembered.

The staff couldn't have been more helpful and the food was both filling and of a high quality. They were waiting for the new chef to start so I look forward to visiting again as he has a lot to live up to. Very well placed for walking with the Helvellyn range on the one side of the Ullswater and High Street on the other and some lower fells with great views.

I visited their with hiking group.
Room was not cleaned with any standard.
This hostel is now close most of the time and only opened if other hostels in Lake districts are full.

I would not recommend at all unless this is the LAST option and that too only single.

Book in! I was here for a few days running in and around Ullswater early November. The hostel is basic but cosy. I booked a lovely small private room (bunk beds and a sink) which was just down the corridor from the well appointed bathroom (with excellent much needed hot showers!). Breakfast was very good and there is a self catering kitchen. The hostel has a lovely atmosphere and although was quite quiet at this time of year felt very friendly.
You're well appointed for some fabulous walks/runs/biking and only a short walk from the excellent White Lion pub (highly recommended with their own ale!) and about 20mins walk from Glenridding.

Do take a torch for your walk back from the pub- the roads aren't lit!
