“Awash With Ideas”

As a late escape the Lake District can be a little daunting as the year round popularity can make it difficult to go there on a whim. This time the whim was easily filled as a couple of hotels had vacancies for the late May bank holiday. Arriving at the hotel the trip seemed doomed to failure and looked to be turning into a disaster as the booked double room was a twin and the weather was simply torrential rain.
Happily the staff were very helpful and a little shuffling around of rooms by manager soon had us in a double with views of the lake and hills.
As to the weather, well you cant go to the lake district and rely on getting hot dry weather all of the time, the clouds parted a lot of the time allowing at least some sun and dry weather and as to the rain, well thats why you always need to carry waterproofs there. Its not unusual to get all 4 seaons in one day. By sticking to the low level areas we managed to only experience 3 seasons, spring summer and autumn, but discussions in the hotel bar at night confirmed that the missing season for us was still there and winter was just hiding a little higher up the hills. One very happy walker who did the rigours of Helvelyn and Striding Edge was extremely happy that she had completed both parts of her walk and had only cried twice !! One of the times she cried was due to the hailstones crashing down on her. The smile on her face and her obvious pride at completing both walks was clear to see.
Food in the hotel was great, breakfast was the usual full fry up, with fruit and porridge available too. The evening meal was different every night with at least 5 choices of main course, nice size portions and excellent service. unresevedly recommended.

Room Tip: In this hotel simple, upgrade to the superior room

stayed 13/5/11 for two nights occasion are 1st wedding anniversary we wanted value for money and a nice quiet hotel tucked away, thats exactly what we got! very friendly attentive staff.
ROOM- On arrival we asked for a 'nice' room we were upgraded to a room with a view to die for, if any complaint room was a wee bit tired, but comfy and clean. The owners are refurbin the hotel at the moment, decorating bed rooms and replacing windows.
FOOD- breakfast buffet lots to choose from hot and cold. Evening meal 3 courses with several choices what we had was very very good only complaint no coffee!!
entertainment in lounge bar saturday night what more could you ask for??
Would i go again?....yes! Would i recomend?....... yes i would!! (shame about the weather sat/sunday tho)

Room Tip: ask for front of hotel if only for the views

Have stayed there many times. Cheaper than many B&B's with an excellent choice of evening food. If you want even better food, go to the Keswick Country House - same chain, dearer but still really good value. Wonderful centre for walking and Keswick's near enough if it rains too much!

lovely staff. great real ale..apparently! nice house wine! fab location and friendly helpful staff. Good deal on half board, worked for us. Evening meal excellent. breakfast self serve, which has advantages as you can have hot toast, but full english gets a little 'dry' under the hot light. hotel could do with little bit of TLC but not overpriced. Excellent atmosphere and fab singer on the saturday night.

Room Tip: go for Lakeland room, as they are on the front.

Family party of 11 with 5 children aged 9 - 17. A wonderful holiday. Excellent food. Staff could not have been more helpful. The younger children were very reluctant about the idea of a walking holiday, but they coped very well and the adults had a job to keep up with the 9-year old. Admittedly the weather was perfect. It was a lovely atmosphere at the Patterdale. Cannot rate it highly enough.
