“Super stay at the Patterdale”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2011

I tend to head to the Lake District on a regular basis because of the brilliant walking and have always stayed in guest houses. The Patterdale Hotel seemed to be offering a good deal to stay monday to friday which included dinner as well as B and B. Having seen previous reviews I wasn't expecting too much in terms of the food. However, I can report that both myself and my wife chose a variety of starters, mains and desserts and all of these were either good or very good. My wife is a trained chef and very picky, but even she was impressed. All of the meat dishes I had were perfectly cooked and delicious. The staff are excellent and overall this was exceptional value. The hotel is excellent as a base for walkers as many classic walks start from Patterdale. While we were there a coach party of pensioners made the place feel a bit like an old folks home as they did tend to take over a bit and be a bit loud. There was one irritation and that was to do with our room. It was positioned at the back of the hotel just above where deliveries were made and often quite late, recycling of bottles etc. became a distraction. The other thing was the lack of consideration of other guests who were banging doors and the like well past 11.30pm. As such, even though we were tired after doing some long walks, neither of us slept well at all. I should add that we popped in for a drink last year and since then the decoration in public areas have been improved. One final thing...while the breakfast is good, avoid the porridge - totally tasteless.

Room Tip: Try for a room at the front of the hotel.

We where staying at a near by campsite and decided to pop over for some food and a drink!!

ok when we arrived the menu wasn't the best so we decided to order some toasties and some tea. The food came out quickly and was very well priced. It was simple, but ticked all the boxes, hot, good quality meat, and well presented. I have eaten in many places that charge a fortune and fail to tick these boxes.

There was decent background music, and the lounge was well presented. The only negatives where the toilets - clean - but very outdated.

Over all I have been in four star hotels that other the same sort off bar food and environment.

I would defiantly stay at this hotel based on the simple meal the four off us had :D

We were delighted with this hotel. Only 2 star and extremely reasonable price but every aspect that mattered was excellent. The food was imaginative and generally well cooked and the large rooms were well equipped. The staff were all friendly, the dining room efficient and even the lounge ticked the right boxes with tea/coffee and games to play. We will definitely return making sure that we book a room with a view, worth the extra

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for a view

We have stayed at The Patterdale on numerous occasions and have just returned from another five day holiday. This hotel is located in a quieter part of the Lake District and is ideal for walkers. The friendly accommodating staff, excellent meals, and clean rooms offer very good value for money.

Room Tip: It's worth paying a bit extra for 1st and 2nd floor front facing rooms which offer lovely view...

We had a ground floor room, small with en suit bathroom both very clean and fresh as was the bedding and towels. Although the room was small it was more than adequate for us as we were out most of the day enjoying the wonderful lake district which included a cruise on a "steam" launch around Ullswater lake. The hotel is a short drive from some amazing areas of natural beauty. If walking and hill climbing is for you, you will not beat this hotel, amazing walks from the front door. After all this exercise it was great to return and enjoy a snack and a drink in the beer garden to discuss your day with new made friends or read a book. In the evening we enjoyed a delicious three course meal and after a relaxing nights sleep a hearty breakfast. I must also add that the staff were friendly, polite, knowledgeable and helpful. I can only speak as I find and my husband and myself had a wonderful holiday and I would recommend this hotel to anyone who enjoys the outdoor life with the comfort of a welcoming hotel.

We have stayed four times at the Patterdale Hotel, always in the January to March period when Choice Hotels offer some amazing value for money deals. We usually stay Monday to Friday and get the Sunday free!! As we are both walkers, the hotel's location is perfect situated at the head of Ullswater and within easy access of Helvellyn, High Street, Skiddaw, Fairfield and Cross Fell. For the less energetic there are lake cruises down Ullswater, Rheged Centre and shopping in Penrith and Keswick. The rooms are comfortable and always warm (vital in February! and the food is impossable to fault. Service can be too swift and we sometimes have to ask for more time between courses. On top of all this the Choice Hotel chain offer loyalty points for customers with 5000 points giving you £10 voucher off accommodation prices.

Room Tip: ask for a lake view!

this was about our eight time in the patterdale, it just gets better . The restaurant and bar have been freshly decorated with new furniture, which has brightened up the place. The food has always been fab but I must say it was superb this time around. The staff were their usual helpful happy self s. Despite the rain we managed to fit in two great walks up on the fell tops it great no to have to get in the car as the walks are literally from your front door. will be back later on in the year CANT WAIT..
