We have just got back from a weekend at The Mortal Man Hotel in Troutbeck. The welcome was warm and we were promptly given a small guided tour of the hotel and its wonderful selection of fireplaces. The bar is cosy with very attentive and friendly staff. It's easy to while away hours sat next to the roaring fire. The evening food was good and hearty and just what you need on a wet and windy February weekend. The hotel is located in the heart of the south Lakes although beware of the numerous potholes on the final road approaching the hotel. A very small inconvenience though.
The rooms were clean and very comfortable and we had two very good nights' sleep. The staff are what really sells this hotel. Always good humoured while working very long shifts, always making time for a chat and seem genuinely glad that you have chosen to stay at the Mortal Man. The hotel is dog friendly and this is part of its charm rather than a negative. This is exactly the kind of hotel / pub / restaurant that you want to come back to after a soggy walk. The breakfasts are ample and cooked fresh to order and served again by friendly staff.
We couldn't say enough good things about this hotel and would definitely go back.

Six of my friends joined me in helping celebrate a special birthday in The Lakes. What had already been a fabulous weekend was topped off by a visit to The Mortal Man. Greeted with 'Champagne on Ice', courtesy of a very kind family friend , the night started with a bang. The food was delicious, location was cosy and inviting and the service was second to none. There were some unique added touches which certainly made it a night to remember and i would like to thank those responsible. I would certainly visit again!

We stayed for two nights over the Christmas period. We have stayed at the hotel before but this visit was a lot more enjoyable. The views and location are spectacular as always and the bar served it's very good food and local ales. It appeared that the rooms have been decorated and are in considerably better condition than our previous stays. Breakfast was delicious as always and the service was relaxed which suited our holiday plans. The only downside was a lack of heating/hot water as the hotel ran out of oil (caused by a supplier we were informed). But the hotel provided heaters and we amicably agreed a discount on the price. So all in all a very relaxing stay and we are looking forward to our next visit.

This is the second time we have stayed at The Mortal Man in 2013; first as a couple in the summer, which has a lovely large garden at the rear to sit out in the sunshine and second from New Year's Eve with two teenage boys. Both times we have found the staff wonderful and the atmosphere relaxing, you can walk right from the Inn or travel a short distance and experience the vast fells. New Year's Eve was fantastic with live folk music and a local man telling tales in the local dialect! We had a great time and kids are always made welcome too. We'll be back!

Room Tip: Ask for a large room if you have children to accommodate the put-up beds.

Just had a fabulous weekend at the Mortal Man in a lovely room with stunning views down to Windermere. We ate here both evenings and the food was excellent, lots of choice and delicious. The staff couldn't have done more for us. The bar areas are really welcoming with log fires burning and we sat happily with a drink and the papers in a warm and friendly environment. There are some great walks from the doorstep. The pub is in a lovely peaceful spot and we slept soundly, waking to a wonderful view in the morning.

A weekend stay at The Mortal Man was just excellent.
The room has fantastic views, in the autumn sun I can't imagine anywhere nicer to be than in the heart of the Lake District. The rooms were very clean and serviced daily. Breakfast was also very good, I'd recommend getting up out of bed slightly early to ensure having a table at the large bay windows where you can really appreciate the views and put you in a good mood for the day.
Staff are very pleasant and always helpful, there's a nice range of local ales to compliment an tasteful menu.
Location is perfect too, close to Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere.
