“Quintessential Lakeland”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2013

For many years we have walked in the Little Langdale valley and often stopped for a drink and a bar meal at the Three Shires. This time we decided to give the inn a try and we were so glad that we did. There was little to disappoint and much to praise, including: the friendly, polite service; the quality of the evening meals (we had three) and the well cooked breakfasts. Our accommodation was of a very good standard and the views from the windows must be some of the best in the Lakes.

Little Langdale is a walker's paradise for all abilities with plenty of low level routes in and out of the valley as well as the relatively easily accessible Lingmoor Fell; and for those looking for a challenge there is the Coniston Range of Fells and all the Great Langdale valley can offer.

The weather (four dry and mainly sunny days) helped but for a real Lakeland experience, whatever the weather, you can't go far wrong with Little Langdale and the Three Shires - we'll be back!

We have just spent the weekend at this lovey hotel. The location is stunning, the staff are very friendly and the food was excellent. The room was fine but, in our opinion, needed a little updating but over all very comfortable. We had a room at the front of the hotel and the views were stunning. The hotel was in the middle of nowhere so we woke to only the birds singing! There are some excellent walks on the doorstep and Langdale, Elterwater, Chapel stile & Grasmere all close by. All in all we had a lovely relaxing weekend in a lovely friendly hotel. We would stay here again.

We've been visiting the Three Shires since 1998 and it has succeeded in modernising, yet retained its cosy charm. The quality of service and food remains very high. Rooms are comfortable and well equipped. The location could hardly be better: off the beaten track; within striking distance of some great hills; all levels of walking on the doorstep; superb views. Once there we rarely drive anywhere. Most of the Southern Fells are accessible if you're prepared to bring a bike to get to the hillfoots. We hope to return there soon.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are bigger, those at the front have the best views.

We stayed at Three Shires for 5 nights last week and had an utterly lovely time. The location is unbelievable, in the middle of nowhere but with Coniston, Great Langdale and Grasmere in walking distance. The Lakeland weather enhanced the views ranging from sunburn one day to snow the next.

In addition to this the rooms were comfortable and clean, the pub lovely and relaxing, the staff warm and welcoming and the food was totally scrumptious! Add to this over 50 whiskies and a very nice range of wines and you can't help but have a great time.

Roll on September when we'll be back, may even try and get a sneaky weekend before.

Thanks

Room Tip: Rooms at thr front have lovely views of the Fells.

Wished we had gone there earlier. We were on a very pretty circuit from Elterwater on a showery day and popped in to miss the hail storm The menu and food looked good and the ambience was attractive. In door and our door seating. Friendly helpful staff.

As a group of 4 friends we have been walking in the lakes for one or two weekends a year since 1992. Over the years, we have stayed in some good and not so good places, but deciding to add an extra day on to our latest jaunt, (to celebrate our 21st year) the Three Shires Inn was chosen as the ideal destination. Rooms are spotlessly clean, Spacious, very comfortable beds, generous quantities of tea, coffee & biscuits in the room, with excellent food, with owners and staff that know how to run a professional business whilst keeping a welcoming and friendly atmosphere throughout. Fantastic Breakfasts, Beer (very important) kept in perfect condition and served at the correct temperature. Not surprising the Three Shires is always busy and has deservedly been recently voted as “the place to eat in the Langdales” by the BBC Countryfile Magazine. Enjoy, we will be back soon!

We were travelling through Little Langdale after photographing Wrynose and Hardknott Passes and stopped at The Three Shires for dinner. Words really can't describe just how good the food was, I had the duck terrine for starters followed by venison with summer pudding for dessert, whilst Anna had smoked salmon with vodka and beetroot mayonaise (without the beetroot) followed by salmon on a bed of mash with spinach and a creme brulee dessert, all of it was excellent, the service matched the food and to top it all they have a selection of 50 single malts to round off the most enjoyable of evenings. It wasn't cheap but who cares, when it's this good you don't mind paying for it and if you do then go to McDonalds-you get what you pay for, and sometimes (as in the case of The Three Shires) you get so much more besides!!!!

We will be back!
