“rather disappointing place”
Reviewed 21 March 2007

Stayed at this hotel, wasn't very impressed! Rude attitude, food terrible and the whole experience is one i would like to repeat. best thing for this place is to be rased to the ground, that way, no one would have to go through what a terrible, nightmarish stay I had!!

Lovely place for overnight stay, good food prepared by landlord himself, was most impressed. Very clean compared to some of the hotels/pubs in the area, specially surrounding the Square.

Beautiful room with four poster bed, enjoyed my stay.

Apart from the location at a major road junction, the hotel itself seems reasonable enough. The rooms are of an average size and appear to have recently been slightly refurbished. The room which I stayed in was hot and airless, a fact which wasn't helped by the two tiny windows overlooking the noisy courtyard behind. The staff when checking in were rude and generally unhelpful, the breakfast was the traditional (overly) greasy fry up served with a surly look which I had come to expect. When checking out the proprietor did his best to ignore me and then sullenly mumbled something and handed me the credit card machine to pay. This isn't an experience I'd care to repeat and would much rather recommend any of the other hotels in the area !

The Hotel is surrounded by a wealth of history, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, such as Leighton Moss, and a wide range of visitor attractions Milnthorpe has a long history - its busy Friday street market in the Square dates from 1334. The village's heyday was from the middle of the eighteenth to the middle of the nineteenth centuries when many of the buildings in the centre of the village (now a conservation area) were completed including the present Cross Keys Hotel. When the turnpike road between Kendal and Lancaster was constructed through the village nearly two hundred years ago Milnthorpe became an important staging post and the Cross Keys gained a fine reputation as a coaching inn with stabling for 36 horses ... more   less
