“Really great place for a good evening out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2013

Went on Friday night with friends for a meal, can't recommend highly enough, the atmosphere was great, and we had a good meal, the food was freshly cooked and well presented with a good choice of menu, the staff were very attentive and efficient and made our evening very special. If you are looking for somewhere for a special evening out with a good meal this is the place.

Visited with our 2 young children on a Monday night after a long drive. The meal was great value and very good food from the penny menu and also a good healthy childs menu. The lady who served use made the children feel so welcome they wanted to go back the next day.
Lovley little pub in a beautiful little village.

Having spent a few days to relax, the room was very comfortable with tea, coffee, sugar, milk, kettle, bottled water and glasses. Lovely clean crisp bedding and the added extra of towels, shampoos, conditioners, soaps and, clean fresh towels. The staff were very helpful and would cater to our every need. We had a large choice for breakfast, fruit, yoghurt, juices, cereals, full english or part of the full English and tea and coffee. The day and evening menu was not disappointing either and with 2 menus and a childrens menu, there was something for everyone. The decor is very welcoming as were the staff which was why the locals must enjoy meeting there to chat over a glass or 2 . We wanted a country feel and we got it, inclusive of the village church bells. It was the perfect place to stay to visit the lakes, explore woods and visit local attractions eg Levens hall and Dallam park with its deer wandering at their leisure and the swans and ducks on the river from the Kent estuary. Very well placed for Kendal and Lancaster for a bit of shopping. We would love to come and visit again and will be recommending to our friends and family..

Having used the Wheatsheaf on & off for many years I still find the best word to describe the food in this beautiful Inn is inconsistent. Sadly my last visit was exactly that.
I revisited it because we needed a location to discuss business over dinner but the food was only average as was the wine but as you might expect the prices were not average. We were seated at a nice sized table but the table was littered with old used beer mats, not the best table decoration for a restaurant. Our starter a red onion and Lancashire cheese tart (suspecting not home made), came with a mound of shredded lettuce far bigger the the tart. The tart tasted fine but obviously heated in the microwave by the high temperature. What we were supposed to do with all the badly prepared and unimaginative salad I do not know! The Main course was a tasty Steak, Mushroom and Ale Pie which was very nice especially as it had the home made feel, the crust had not been cooked separately and just sat in the 'beef stew' however the vegetables were luke warm, tasteless and boring. The phrase 'chips with everything' rules at the Wheatsheaf. Why oh why do cooks in these aspiring (according to the owners themselves) eateries see fit to always serve badly cooked carrots, frozen peas and boiled cauliflower; indeed any vegetable? Our final course we ordered a cheese board which was acceptable save to say the selection was not identified by the very pleasant but not knowledgeable server. The final disappointment was that the restaurant ran out of our wine, frustrating!
Like so many similar 'country inns' the Wheatsheaf is lacking sound culinary & hospitality knowledge which if employed would put the establishment miles ahead of its rivals & competitors.

We chose to eat at The Wheatsheaf as we had tickets for The Heron theatre in the village. Having consulted Trip Advisor and seen what reviewers were saying I was a little apprehensive but a friend who eats there often recommended it.
We were not disappointed by the main course which was very good (we both had the duck) and the startes and puds @1p were amazing. My husband had tomato and carrot soup with chunks of bread and I had pate with caremelised onions and melba toast, together both costing the princely sum of 2p! My husband then pushed the boat out by having a pudding but I didn't (you can tell I'm a Yorkshire lass). His chose the trifle which he ate with gusto. I then abandoned all fiscal caution and ordered a trifle too but without the cream and custard (was I hoping for a price reduction perhaps?) which was duly served without any quibble at such a strange request.
The service was fine, our dishes arrived at the right temperature very quickly and the bill was very reasonable.
Try it sometime is all I can say.

We went as a party of 11 for an evening meal. The food was fairly good, but the service was atrocious. We arrived at 7pm and were served our starter at 8.15pm. We didn't receive the dessert until 9.40pm. We were put in an upstairs room and thought this was possibly the reason we were 'forgotten' however, on a trip to the bar it was clear that others were complaining about lack of service too. If the pub can't cater for 11 people, it shouldn't have taken our booking. We saw three staff the whole evening, the barman who was rushed off his feet and two girls who appeared 'now and again'.I was told by one of the locals that the owners were 'tight' and didn't staff the place and that it was now usual for this awful service.

Having stayed several times at this Pub/Hotel we were, this time, unfortunately disappointed. We stayed in the same room as always but the bed size had shrunk & there were no complementary toiletries. I had a very restless night, voices, clanking of pipes, so looking forward to breakfast. Alas, this was a disappoitment too. Choice was poor on cereal fruit etc and a menu never materialised, we were just asked what we would like.Poached eggs on brown toast was our choice. A pot of tea/coffee later it eventuially appeared. One egg on a slice of thin brown bread and a slice on the side. Not very appealing. They were hardly run off their feet only one other couple having breakfast who were finishing as we sat down for ours. On settling our bill we were not asked about our stay. I decided not to say anything and thought this review would be best. This is not good value, the rooms looked tired in need of some tlc, all in all quite disappointed this time. The village of Beetham is as pretty as ever and the waitresses in the evening were good humoured & attentive.

Room Tip: The church bells chime every quarter so if you do not like bells give this one a wide berth. If ther...
