“A magical place to stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2014

Beautifully located next to the lake with stunning views of the famous Wastwater Screes and cliffs, this is a great place to stay. It is a quiet place, far from the crowds in other parts of the Lake District and a bit off the beaten track, but well worth the effort of getting there.

We chose not to use the members kitchen and found the food to be excellent! Breakfast choice is good and the evening meals are extremely good value for money - why travel to the pub when the food is so good at the hostel? My wife described her risotto as the best she had ever eaten! My need to eat gluten free was catered for with a special menu being sent to me in advance. Gluten free packed lunches are available too!

The staff are superb: friendly, and only too pleased to help.

The building has character, the lounge being a delightful place to relax in the evening with magazines, books (for all ages) and games, or just to chill out and compare notes with other guests.

There are loads of great walks nearby!

Room Tip: Book in advance to try and get a smaller room. Like all hostels with some large dormitories you risk...

Stayed for 2 nights over last weekend.

We initially made a hash of our booking after I realised that it clashed with a prearranged break. Rang the Hostel directly and they could not have been more helpful, swapped the date no problem.

Then I forgot to write the new date on the calendar and had to ring them to ask when we were going. This amused them greatly and we were teased on arrival!! especially since I couldn't even remember if I had paid or not.

Anyway if you are stressed out (like me) this is most definitely the place to come and unwind. The staff are absolutely the warmest and friendliest people, nothing too much trouble and very jovial. The other guests were an eclectic range of people; students, families and serious walkers, also quite a few little kids. The atmosphere was very friendly and relaxed.

Our room (room 3) was very clean, we had one double bed with a single over it and a separate bunk bed unit. There were 2 windows, one of which had a view of the lake. And what a beautiful lake! In the evening we took our drinks down to the rocky shore and watched it go dark, saw a barn owl fly over the main lawn.

The things that kept our kids amused were a slack line slung between 2 trees, rope swings and the games room which has table tennis, pool and table football. Geoff the dog is great fun, will play fetch for hours.

We only sampled breakfast so cant comment on the evening meal but it smelled delicious!

Top tips?

Don't forget midge repellent if you are planning on sitting outside in the evening.

Don't attempt the Hard Knot pass unless rally driving really is your thing.

Thanks to all the staff for a lovely weekend.

Excellent YHA. A beautiful old building with some of the facilities newly refurbished, we had a brand new room with a double bed, right next door to brand new excellent showers!
And the staff - well they were just fantastic, friendly, obliging and definitely service with a smile.
We had no mobile reception and no internet, it was absolute bliss!
One of the last real tranquil, unspoilt spots in the UK, must be...
I would rather spend my time and money here than at any fancy Lakes hotel!
An utter gem...

Having last visited Wastwater one winter's day 24 years ago when it left a deep and lasting impression, I felt a return visit was timely! Arriving mid-afternoon on a warm and sunny day in 2014 with the blue of the sky reflected in the water, the house and grounds were deserted. I settled upon a rock at the waters edge and felt all was good with the world. The colours of the water, the acoustics, the lumpen fells; all were lovely and beckoning and the 'mad world' 'out there' was instantly forgotten.

I would have slept better the first night had I remembered my earplugs - very necessary if you're a light sleeper sharing an 8-bed dorm :/. Luckily, they're sold at reception so you don't have to make the 32mile round trip to the nearest large town - only wished I'd known that before but...seeing real life outside the Lakes is also a valuable and sobering experience.

The hostel is just lovely; well cared for and well managed with lots of space to curl up in with a book, map or drink - or even all three. Travel alone and you're sure to meet some like-minded and diverse groups of people and to enjoy new experiences.

The beds are comfortable and clean, the showers deliciously hot on aching limbs and the food wholesome and excellent value. The coffee is Fairtrade and would've got the thumbs up from my Italian Mother :) and all this catered for by kind and attentive staff. Alternatively, there's a good size self-catering kitchen and the hostel provides labels for food going in the fridge.

It's a bit of a trek to get to Wastwater but that only makes it all the more rewarding when you get there and, being in the south west Lakes, the valley isn't overrun with hoards of people. The perfect place to relax and enjoy nature in all its forms from a gentle stroll in the lush green woods to the windswept tops of fells. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Stayed in 'Yewbarrow'; 8 bunks with a view over the lake.

Hi,
Many thanks for your review. It's good to know that a previous visit many uyears ago left such an impression on you and you felt moved to come back again; hopefully it won't be so many years until you come back once more. We pride ourselves on the hostel and it's location, it really cannot be beaten, even if it is a bit of a trek but then that makes it feel even more special and there's good reason why people consider the view from the lake shore here 'Britians Favourite View'. The staff that work here also have great pride on the service we provide and the food we serve, hopefully making it feel a home from home.

Excellent service. Extremely clean. Very positive and helpful with directions to local attractions.

I would definitely recommend this youth hostel.

Awesome view with the lake right in from of you and also a view to the highest mountain in England.

I wish to endorse the previous review by my friend Steve Clare (above) and confirm that this an amazingly beautiful and peaceful location by the magnificent Wastwater with surrounding screes and fells. The rooms comfortable, breakfasts and packed lunches superb and staff friendly, helpful and knowledgeable of the area.
The fact that there was no contact with the electronic world was superb as it meant speech became the means of communication.
Thanks to Bob and the staff.
PS will you send me the fiver you promised now I have written this ?

Just returned from a fantastic weekend staying at the YHA Wast water. Every year six old friends (all former venture scouts from Ongar Essex.) travel to the lakes to get our yearly fix of this wonderful place. We are now into our 7th year staying at various hostels throughout the lakes. This is by far the best, congratulations to Bob and all his staff that made our weekend. Tucked away and overlooking Wast water the views towards Wasdale head are truly magnificent.
Sssshh don't tell everyone but it's a little piece of paradise !,
