“dont tell anyone”
Reviewed 25 March 2010

Stayed here two nights with a group of old friends so we could scale Scafell. The location is nicely remote and a good drive along winding roads. The staff were attentive and helpfull. The games room has taken a bit of a battering but served its purpose nicely and the drying room wasn't quite as hot as other but I'm finding fault for no reason really. Would happliy bring my family here for a week. Food looked good but we had booked in the Strands. My bed was a bit like a hammock but hey - its a YHA and after the walk we did i would have slept on rocks.

The actual building and location of this place is amazing
What i cant get my head around is that the only people staying here would be walkers and so why after getting soaked climbing Ben Nevis and leaving sodden wet clothes to dry in the drying room would my north face coat have dissapeared the next morning ???
Surely whoever came to stay in this place would be adequately kitted out so why the need to take another walkers coat
Be warned if you stay here better to have a wet coat than no coat at all !!
The staff would not in the slightest bit interested in dealing with my loss either so cant say this place was value for money when you factor in the loss

Part of me would like to keep this place a secret, but it is too good not to share.
First the setting...........Wow, the most beautiful setting in the UK. When you come round the corner and see the lake and the scree slope plunging into the lake with the mountains as a backdrop the jaw will hit the floor, breathtaking.

The Hall is gorgeous old manor hall with a huge studded oak door. It sitson the bank of Wastwater lake facing the scree slope.
The rooms are clean and tidy, the library/lounge is a great place to relax after a long walk and share stories or read stories. It has an open fire and a piano. You can use the kitchen to make your own food or you can eat in the restaurant, they make breakfast lunch snacks and evening dinner. The food is that of a top quality restaurant not what you might expect of a YHA.
The staff are really friendly.

For the price of a youth hostel it has no comparison, you could pay 100 times as much but would not get anyway near the ambiance or scenery as this place.
It is more of a drive to get there than the other lakes but you will not regret it, it blows all the other lakes away.

  • Liked — The walk around the lake, what an adventure.
  • Disliked — Its the lake district, it rains abit!
