Owner description: The historic and reputedly haunted Castle dating from the mediaeval age has been home to the Pennington family for over 800 years. It is a treasury of beautiful art and antiques, collected through the ages by the family who still live there. The Castle sits majestically in over 70 acres of wild, woodland gardens famous for collections of rhododendrons and azaleas set against the stunning backdrop of the Lakeland fells including Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain. The Bird of Prey Centre is well worth a visit with daily displays at 2.30Pm and watch the wild herons come in to feed at Heron Happy Hour at 4pm. The indoor MeadowVole Maze is an entertaining ecological attraction to entertain the young at heart. Playground, cafe, gift shops and an ancient church are all within the gardens. Regular events programme, including festivals, outdoor theatre, historical re-enactors and Halloween Week.

“Beautiful grounds, plenty to see and do”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2014 via mobile

We visited as a family with our 3 year old son on a lovely warm Saturday. We had all worn sandals and I was worried when we arrived that we would struggle with the pathways when I realised it was a half - mile walk to the castle! But the tarmac was in great condition and the walk up to the castle was beautiful. We arrived around 11.15 and our son went straight onto kids play ground and spent a good half hour there. We had brought a picnic lunch with us and had it on the lawn behind the main playground. There was a wedding taking place so we couldn't go into the house which although we hadn't planned to do, I was rather disappointed after seeing how lovely it looked from the outside! However we were still able to walk around the outside of the house and we went up to the Meadow Vole Maze which my son loved - so much we had to go straight back in and do it again after we came out! We had an ice cream in the courtyard cafe then went to Meet The Birds which was interesting and informative. We then walked down to the terrace which boasted some stunning views, and back through the Muncaster churchyard which was beautiful and so peaceful.
The gardens are beautiful - not obsessively manicured, but allowed to be a little wild which promotes the natural beauty of the place. We had a fabulous day here and would love to return and see the house this time. Definitely a hidden jewel!

“Good but not great. ”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 June 2014 via mobile

Go around to the front of the castle to see a fantastic view of the mounti s to the east. Although the cafe appears to do nice cakes the cooked food is dire. Burnt lasagne and unbeatable fish and chips. The owl sanctuary does not feel quite right. Birds displayed in cramped pens with little room to fly. Also no explanation of how these birds have been acquired which raises concerns about the ethics of keeping these birds captive. Given that the estate is removing invasive non native plant species from the grounds, it is hard to believe that the management are not aware of the issues surrounding keeping birds in captivity.

“Beautiful Castle and Grounds”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 June 2014

The beauty of Muncaster is that the gardens are very natural and rural and set in a magnificent location - the castle has a most fabulous view down the valley. A highlight for us was bumping into the very characterful 'King of the Castle' over lunch in the castle cafe. We loved the owl santuary, what great work they are doing to preserve these lovely birds in our environment and in fact throughout the world. Well done to all for your efforts.

“A great day out for all”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

Muncaster Castle is a great day out for people of any age there is plenty to see and do lots of activities taking place walks around several of the gardens, and plenty of exciting stuff for children to take part in, a cannon is activated every so often, then there is the Castle which is fascinating steeped in history with a lot of facts and fiction surrounding it, I shall not say any more it will only spoil things for people who have not been yet but what I shall say is a visit to Muncaster Castle is worth the journey you will not be disappointed.
