Owner description: The historic and reputedly haunted Castle dating from the mediaeval age has been home to the Pennington family for over 800 years. It is a treasury of beautiful art and antiques, collected through the ages by the family who still live there. The Castle sits majestically in over 70 acres of wild, woodland gardens famous for collections of rhododendrons and azaleas set against the stunning backdrop of the Lakeland fells including Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain. The Bird of Prey Centre is well worth a visit with daily displays at 2.30Pm and watch the wild herons come in to feed at Heron Happy Hour at 4pm. The indoor MeadowVole Maze is an entertaining ecological attraction to entertain the young at heart. Playground, cafe, gift shops and an ancient church are all within the gardens. Regular events programme, including festivals, outdoor theatre, historical re-enactors and Halloween Week.

“Nice but”

We thought the 13 pd. price was a little steep, especially since we didn't get there until 3:30 p.m. and it closed at 4:30. Not much time to look around the castle and the garden.

“The audio guide really made the difference”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2014

I had low expectations going in since it's privately owned and not National Trust or English Heritage. I've been disappointed in the past, like in Castle Howard, by privately owned places. However Muncaster Castle was a real joy to visit primarily because of the audio guide.

It had so many interesting tidbits and stories behind objects and art. The house has much of its original contents and is still lived in. The audio guide is done by the family members and has a lovely touch of humour and that English self-deprecation which I loved.

The grounds we found less enchanting, partly due to the weather, partly due to the large amount of school children running about, and mostly due to time pressures. There was so much to do at Muncaster but we'd originally come to ride the Ravenglass steam train.

The owl centre was mildly interesting to us, but probably more relevant for children and people who need educated in stewardship of the earth.

The restaurant was surprisingly good with a nice variety.

Only big downside was trying to buy a couple things in the giftshop and there being at least 20 schoolchildren in the queue despite my giving up and going back two times.

“Beautiful grounds and owls.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2014

We visited on a Saturday when the Castle was shut for a wedding, but we visited the beautiful gardens and I loved going around the owl sanctuary. The staff were helpful and the gardens well tended. We had just missed the best of the rhododendrons, but there was still plenty to see.

“Something for all the family”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2014

What a lovely house and grounds. We were there during there festival so there was lots to do. There was a walk from the car park to the house but it was a beautiful walk through some of their gardens.

We also visited the owl centre there I enjoyed seeing all different owls that they look after. You have to pay more to visit the owl centre.
