Owner description: The historic and reputedly haunted Castle dating from the mediaeval age has been home to the Pennington family for over 800 years. It is a treasury of beautiful art and antiques, collected through the ages by the family who still live there. The Castle sits majestically in over 70 acres of wild, woodland gardens famous for collections of rhododendrons and azaleas set against the stunning backdrop of the Lakeland fells including Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain. The Bird of Prey Centre is well worth a visit with daily displays at 2.30Pm and watch the wild herons come in to feed at Heron Happy Hour at 4pm. The indoor MeadowVole Maze is an entertaining ecological attraction to entertain the young at heart. Playground, cafe, gift shops and an ancient church are all within the gardens. Regular events programme, including festivals, outdoor theatre, historical re-enactors and Halloween Week.

“Lovely day out”
Reviewed 26 July 2014

We had picked the hottest week and having rode on motorbikes from Ambleside we were a little 'warm' when we arrived. When we payed we jumped at the chance to leave our jackets and helmets behind the counter.its a half mile walk to the castle but you walk threw some lovely grounds. Loved seeing the owls, the castle is beautiful and the views are amazing but I was a bit disappointed at the amount of rooms that are available to the public. We paid £13 each, which is not too bad.but we didn't see anything else as by this time the heat had wore us down in our hot biker gear.and we decided to carry on our journey to Whitehaven.

“Just Excellent”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

Intended to have a short visit but ended up spending most of the day there. The walks in the grounds go on and on and the collection of owls is magnificent, the castle itself is most interesting. We had lunch in the café and was pleasantly surprised at what good value it was, so used to these type places charging inflated prices for deflated food but not here. Well worth the visit.

“Very helpful staff”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

We have just returned from 5 days camping in the Lake District. One particularly warm day we visited Muncaster Castle & owl sanctuary. It was a wonderful day. It may not have turned out this way if two lovely ladies who worked there hadn't come to my aid. I had a flip flop blow out & they were kind enough to spend time repairing it & attempting to find me other footwear. The repair held & we spent 4 hours at the venue.
These lovely ladies were in the Owl Santuary tea shop & reception. Thank you ladies.
I can also recommend the tea & cake at the tea shop. Great value for money all round.

“Fantastic castle in amazing grounds”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

This really is a gem of a tourist attraction. It is a truly beautiful castle with stunning grounds and an interesting owl sanctuary which adds something extra. The castle is really good value and also has a lovely restaurant. We went on a sunny day in May and spent several pleasant hours here. We ate in the restaurant and the food was also good value - I had a regional dish which was excellent and was the best food I ate in my five day trip. The interiors of the castle are stunning and we especially enjoyed the guided audio tours. These were informative and user friendly but what set them apart from other castles and stately homes was that they involved personal commentary and stories from different generations of the family themselves which were truly humorous. We loved it. This was our highlight of a week in the Lakes and that is high praise indeed. Highly recommended.

“Fun for all ages”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

Fab attraction!! Sunday afternoon spent wandering round the castle grounds and the castle itself. Good audio tour in the castle narrated by various family members. It would have been nice to see more of the castle however that's just me, there's loads to see as it is.
The owl centre is great, so many species to look at, and the bonus of a show later in the afternoon. The keepers are experts and happy to answer any owl related queries.
Kate's cafe was good for some lunch and tea and cake later on.

Overall a lovely day out for anyone. The children's facilities seemed great, plenty to keep them occupied. We'll be visiting again when we have little ones to entertain!!
