Brilliant and fun trip on the steam train. Excellent cafe at the station, with value for money menu.

Friendly and knowledgeable staff in the shop where we bought train tickets. Picnic area outside ideal for eating and coffee and food available inside. Delightful station and steam train had seating in the open, half open, fully enclosed. We chose to sit outide which was fun, not very comfortable on the hard wooden seats but to be expected. It was a little cold on the day and we sat in the half enclosed on the return journey. We bought a coffee and gluten free cake and returned after a 10 minute stopover. A good journey but the highlight of the day was driving from Ambleside for a good hour's drive through amazing remote countryside with an occasional car and many sheep along the way. We conquered Wrynose Pass and Hard Knots Pass and even the staff at Eskdale were impressed....they suggested a more conventional drive home but we chose to return the same way and enjoy the challenge.

Probably the best day out in the western lakes away from the majority of tourists. A day ticket enables you to get on and off at any stop - refreshments are available both at Ravenglass and at Dalegarth at the ends of the journey. Views of the estuary and of the hills when you come out of the trees are good, a single journey takes about 40 minutes with about twenty minutes turnaround at each end - but why not let that one go and catch the next! This is what we did and sampled the café at Dalegarth. Some weekends can be quite busy with visiting locos and special events but steam trains run on the majority of services in the summer season.

We went on a steam train to Boot and came back on a diesel train. You can stop and get off at any station along the way to visit attractions and get another train back. It is dog friendly and my dogs really enjoyed the ride. Food in cafe very good and has a nice gift shop. Staff very friendly and there is a picnic area and a play park for children. Once you have purchased your ticket you can ride all day so if you are going to make a day of it it is good value for money.
