Fantastic food (and we mean FANTASTIC), a really special team of staff topped off with great accommodation is just what we needed to welcome 2014 in great style and make us very happy people! The Pennington family of Muncaster Castle have restored this old hotel with tasteful, contemporary character and the place just oozes 'welcome' and warmth. From the moment we arrived we felt totally at home - the dog-friendly room was perfect (and didn't smell at all 'doggy') and our rascal of a terrier as no problem at all. So, thank you to Jane, Kate and everyone at The Pennington in Ravenglass for a great New Year's Eve....we're about to book for next year!

My first visit to the Pennington was, simply for a cup of coffee but having seen the menu we stayed for dinner. I found the menu problematic in that I just wanted to try it all! The fact that its mostly produce from their own estate just made it more difficult. Having sampled the menu I just had to return and stay there. Friendly, welcoming and helpful. Loved it. I'll be back.

The hotel is owned and managed by the same family that own the nearby castle, a popular wedding venue and the reason we were in Ravenglass. As a result it is perfectly located for easy access to the castle and the facilities are good. For those making the journey by train, it is a very short walk to the station.

While the food is good, the service leaves a little to be desired. Because the hotel is relatively quiet during the day one can sit in the bar for some time before being served as there is not always a member of staff in the bar.

The rooms are very nice and the housekeeping staff attentive and very pleasant.

Been a birthday girl again today, the children came up to visit, and they are staying at the hotel as I type, we live in Ravenglass and visit the Pennington Hotel often, so after a quick party at home we continued the party mood in the morning room of the Pennington Hotel so that we didn't disturb the other guests, as in our party were two grandchildren of 6 and 3, so we played a number of board games, then came supper of anti pasta, a giant prawn cocktail, a really splendid cheese board and several big bowls of the most wonderful chip's, the wine was of exceptional quality too, we finished on a high note with two birthday chocolate cake's one especially for me which was glutten free, and the other was a chocolate torte of fantasic quality, severed up with wonderful vanilla ice cream. Now for the staff while having to very big parties in for their annual Christmas Parties, they managed to play with the children, served us with this fantasic supper, joined in the celebration of my cutting of the birthday cakes, what kind and wonderful folk they are at the Pennington, can't wait for Christmas which we will be sending there! do visit and enjoy their kindness and attention to perfection, fabulous food and birthday cakes all made on site. Well done and a big thank you for two perfect nights.

Room Tip: I have to say we've stayed in the Hotel ourselves and we only live a few doors down from the Hot...

We stayed on Saturday for one night with our children. We were made very welcome by the staff. The family room was great with the children separate enough from us. The only criticism I have is the bathroom could do with a bit of work doing to the floor and round the edges.
The meal we had in the restaurant was tasty and we enjoyed a few after dinner drinks in the bar. Would recommend a stay here.

Stayed here for a weekend with a group of friends. The staff were lovely and so welcoming. The rooms we had were very modern and stylish which was quite a surprise as from the outside it looked just like an old pub. Ravenglass is tiny with just one main hotel, a post office (that offers a "cash back" facility which is handy as the nearest ATM is about 4 miles away) and a railway station with a mainline service and a lovely minature steam train which is definitely the main attraction here. We did have a heating issue with our courtyard room but the staff were helpful and sorted it out. The bar and restaurant were comfortable and prices were reasonable. Service in both the bar and restaurant were excellent and considering the size of our party the staff coped really well. The chef is to be commended as the food was wonderful and as good, if not better, than some of the best restaurants we have visited. We had a great weekend and would definitely come here again. Just one minor point to mention is the lack of a mobile phone signal in the hotel but it does have free wi-fi access which is useful. Surrounding area is great if you like walking but bring a map as the sat nav doesn't always pick up a signal.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are very spacious.

Myself, husband and our three young children spent (sadly) only one night at this lovely hotel. We were given a warm welcome settled into our room, then proceeded downstairs for a delicious meal. The staff were very accommodating and pleasant, nothing was too much trouble.
The room was delightful, spacious with everything we needed. The bathroom was large with a great strong shower, bliss! We really didn't want to leave, and really look forward to a return visit.
Thank you so much for a very much longed for, break away.

Room Tip: We had a family room, us in one area, children in another, it was a great set up. Room 19. Beautiful...
