“A warm welcome and a lovely cup of tea!”
Reviewed 5 September 2013

We made a slight detour from The Dales Way walk to pop in to see the Meeting House, and we were not disappointed. We were made very welcome, and the "regulars" seemed genuinely pleased to meet passers by. The building itself is fascinating too!

“Peace and tranquility”
Reviewed 22 June 2013

I love this place!
Park on the main road and walk down the lane. You will be surrounded by hedgerows and wild flowers. On your right, before you reach the Meeting House, is the burial ground. More wild flowers and a sense of timelessness. Further down, on your left is the Meeting House. Step in to the quietness. Feel the history. Sit for a few moments. Refresh your spirit.

“Timeless, calm and empowering.”
Reviewed 13 April 2013

We stopped off 'on the off-chance' to revisit a place I'd been to on a school trip over 50 years ago!

No problems with entry! Just lift the latch, and if you need extra lighting, the note on the door tells you where to find the light switch.

Inside it was cool, peaceful and timeless. Simply furnished, with historical explanations of the building and its circumstances in several languages including Slovenian (nearby Sedbergh is twinned with a town in Slovenia), information about the Quaker faith, and a peacefulness and calm that money just can't buy.
You feel that you have been transported back through the centuries, but that your current time and life also has its place in that simple room.

We met a lovely lady who was preparing the room for the next day's Meeting, and were invited to help ourselves to tea, coffee and biscuits in the room next door. This was a very friendly relaxed room with shelves of books for visitors to browse, not only about the Quaker faith and way of life but also about the local area.

The Meeting House has a peaceful garden, with views over the pastures and nearby fells. It also has toilet facilities, discreet but welcome!

Do take a few minutes out of your journey and your life to follow the country lane from the main Sedbergh-Kirby Lonsdale road and discover Briggflatts Meeting House. It will leave its mark, and also perhaps introduce you to another Faith besides all those that you hear about so frequently in the media.

Thank you to all the Friends who keep Briggflatts open for others to enjoy, as we did.

“A haven of calm”
Reviewed 23 March 2013

This is the oldest Meeting House in the north of England and the second oldest in the entire country. It was built as a result of George Fox's visit to the area in 1652. The interior woodwork is well worth seeking out and the setting if the building is peaceful and with a charming garden. Fox's Pulpit, where the founder preached, is at Firbank, not many miles away.

“Quaker meeting house”
Reviewed 16 March 2013

One of the oldest meeting houses. An open door gives access to refreshments and a loo for anyone passing by. An almost unique experience.
