“Out of the way, but great hosts who want to succeed!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 November 2011

I had mucked up the bookings for the beginning of the Coast to Coast walk and had my mate and me in St Bee's a day early. I realised this only a few days before we flew out of Australia and frantically searched for beds for the extra night.

I got onto John and he was able to give us a twin room. Sheer relief and what a lucky find, thought I....a manor house with a vacancy. John kindly picked us up at St Bee's Station and drove us "home". The "manor" turned out to be a fairly new and modern build and we were shown to a great room on the first floor, spacious and with a good ensuite bathroom. The bathroom did have an "interesting" shower screen that, because neither of us is an engineer, saw us struggling to stop the bathroom flooding, but this is small stuff in the scheme of things.

The B&B is comfortable, warm, secure and quiet! The beds were comfortable, we slept well, and we found John and Mandy to be excellent hosts. They advised us on local restaurants, and their advice was so good that we went back to Blacksmiths in Bigrigg both nights we were in St Bee's. They served us a great breakfast and were extremely hospitable. Because we couldn't check into our next B&B until the afternoon, John kindly drove us to a local laundrette so we could fill in the hours making sure we had clean gear for our walk!

John can be a bit off in his directions, more around distance than anything else. He told us we could walk to a couple of places - we got cabs and were very glad we did as the mile or two quickly turned into five or more!

Am I complaining? No, definitely not! Both of us enjoyed this stay. It is great to be with people who take pride in what they are doing. I'd stay there again.

Room Tip: Don't be afraid to ask John for a lift BUT beware his judgement of distance! (sorry John - could...

My husband and I stayed at Ellerbeck Manor over the bank holiday weekend and can honestly say the accommodation was fantastic. The barn is beautiful, surrounded by countryside, great value for money and the owners John and Mandy couldn't do enough for us. They gave us great advice and information on the local area and set us up for the day with a tasty cooked breakfast. We had a lovely break and would definitely stay at Ellerbeck Manor again. Highly recommended.

we will definately be returning here, we just hope they dont get that popular that they cant fit us in. Breakfast was superb and nothing is too much trouble for the owners. The accomodation is wonderful and spotless, d highly reccomend to families or couples. the room we stayed in was beautiful with a large roll top bath and a shower ensuite and a super kingsize bed!

Working at Bigrigg just a few miles away, I stayed several times for 2 nights mid week between June and July in one of the bedrooms in the main barn building. John and Mandy made sure I was well looked after I loved the jug of fresh milk left in my room as I returned each evening…no little plastic sachet here! John showed me my room with en:suite bathroom, a great room with views over the fields and what can only be described as a 5 star bathroom with its wet room style power shower and free-standing bath with chrome feet…classy Everything in the room is new clean and fresh with exposed beams and oak floors, the beds are extremely comfortable and at night its very peaceful and quiet. One night I was treated to my own nature show when a barn owl sat on my windowsill and took a good look at me before flying away. I Liked the easy way John has for paying the bill via papal confirmation and receipt in a few clicks! I could go on but put simply if you stay with John and Mandy you will not be disappointed

Room Tip: contact John direct for the best price!!

Have just returned from a weekend stay at Ellerbeck with my husband and mother-in-law. Although we had booked in for bed and breakfast we actually had the ground floor of this beautifully converted barn to ourselves, complete with 2 ensuite double bedrooms, lounge with wood burning stove, flat screen tv, under floor heating and patio doors leading on to a small patio. There was also a superbly equipped dining kitchen with tea, coffee, milk and sugar on supply. Breakfast was superb and was served upstairs in the family dining room. John and Mandy were warm, friendly hosts and provided us with an abundance of local knowledge about things to do, places to eat etc. It is simply one of the best B & B's we have stayed in and fantastic value for money.

On arrival we were greeted by John and Mandy who made us very welcome.
There are two on suite double bedrooms built and furnished to a very high standard.
The B&B is located close to St Bees the start of the Coast to Coast walk and Whitehaven the start of the C2C cycle ride.
The barn conversion is three floors high with the B&B on the top floor, the owners accomodation on the middle floor and to our surprise a lovely on suite two bedroom holiday cottage/apartment on the ground floor, which is stunning.
The location is the Western Lakes with Ennerdale and Wastwater (Englands best view) a short drive away a little further is Ravenglass with its Roman Bath House and The Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway and muncaster castle just down the road.
We were looked after very well with a hearty Cumbrian breakfast if you can manage it otherwise there are all the other breakfast meals.
We could not fault this establishment and will be back
