Had a very disappointing meal there on Monday last - and the staff were not interested when I told them we were unhappy with both the service and the food. Yes I agree it is a nice destination -log fire etc, but the service was embarrassingly slow. There were 5 of us in total - 2 meals got served almost straight away, then the fifth person came later - ordered food which was delivered ages before the remaining 2 meals. The staff's response was to blame us for ordering on separate tabs - but why then would the 5th meal arrive before the 2 meals ordered at least half an hour before?
The quality of the food was poor - I think you will ok eating here if you like food straight from the freezer and into the fryer and paying over the odds for it. - it was poor, my friend's fish and chips were over cooked and cold.
In future we will stick to the new (ish) Staveley Beer Hall and or Wilf's next door - much better food in both places and much better value. Sorrry to be negative but when I told the staff - they didn't even make an attempt at an apology.
We hadn't eaten there for a while and now I remember why!

Just returned from a short trip to The Lakes. We stayed in the Kendal area with our 11 & 12 year old children and two dogs. Before travelling googled 'Dog friendly pubs in the Kendal area' and whilst we didn't stay in this pub/hotel we feel that this place has to be given top marks as a pub. We arrived 7-30pm on a busy saturday evening with no reservation, and were assured that the kids and dogs were not a problem. The food was exceptionally good value and plenty of it offering great value. So much so we went back on Sunday evening when we received an excellent warm welcome and equally good vale and hospitality. This was the height of the holiday season and nothing was too much trouble. I can';t speak highly enough of this place. I don't believe dogs are allowed for accomodation, but it makes such a difference to find a jewel like this anywhere.

Only ate here so can't comment on the accommodation. Having eaten here a few years ago we looked forward to our return. Unfortunately, the the Hot Pot was almost inedible, found three pieces of lamb in it & one was a dry lump which couldn't be eaten & it was all swimming in tasteless gravy. Not a fussy eater but had to leave most of this dish. Very disappointing.
Pleasant young man behind the bar otherwise staff had difficulty raising a smile. Would benefit from staff training & a senior person to oversee the service & 'meet & greet'. This venue need some serious competiiton in the village. On the plus side a pleasant garden area across the road by the river.

We stayed here for 1 night as my partners parents were staying at a nearby campsite. We had lunch in The Eagle and Child which was very nice. Fanstasic value for the lunch for a fiver deal. My hint would be go hungry before you eat, as there's a lot, we couldn't eat it all.

The staff were polite but were all quite young so were a little reserved, but still friendly enough.

I cannot fault the room. It had a view over the stream, comfotable beds and I wish my bathroom was as nice as theirs! Lovely. The breakfast was one of the best you could ask for. No cheap sausages there! All good quality and served in a fantastic room, which looked like some medieval banquet hall.

The pub has a fine selection of ales, lagers and ciders and also had my favourite belgian beers in stock. There is a large beer garden to the front and decked area to the back. Unfortunately, the rain kept us away from using the facilities, but inside the pub was lovely so couldnt complain.

Staveley is about 5mins from Kendal by car andabout 15mins to Windemere. We will definitely go back here. The locals werevery friendly and talkative to us. It was like being in Emmerdale!!

I have been here a few times to eat with friends, when visiting the lake district and every time the staff have been down right rude. (I have never stayed here, so can't comment on rooms etc.) I am quiet a patient person and accept that everyone can have their off days, but here they never seem to have good days.

Don't expect to be greeted by a smile or with manners. The staff working here should not be in the hospitality industry. Even the manager was rude. It was also interesting to note that having spoken to other people who have been here, we are not the only people that feel this way.

To be fair the food can be good, however it depends on what chef is cooking as it can also be very hit and miss.

Overall, I would avoid this place by like plague unless you want to be treated like a complete and utter inconvenience by rude and ill mannered staff. Go to the Watermill in Ings (about a mile away) where you will be warmly greeted and welcomed by nice staff

Room Tip: Rude staff - avoid the place

been to the eagle and child on numerous occasions, usually have the dinner, bed & breakfast option, which is spot on, a hearty brekkie at the start of the day, loads of walks and scenery around staveley etc, theres a bus stop on the pub doorstep or the railway station is 5mins walkaway to go further afield, we've had a trip to carlisle races via the train from staveley, great day. back to the eagle & child for a couple of pints of well kept real ale, beside an open fire. even though we had booked D,B&B you still have to book your table for dinner because its very popular in the evenings, the meals are fantastic from the menu and equally so from the specials board....
