“great break”
Reviewed 15 April 2013

Just got back from a great night at the eagle. We went on a D,B&B deal very well priced room ,beer and food were all top quality and served very well. The rooms look to have been renovated recently. The owner put the full breakfast spread on for us even though we were the only people staying which was very much appreciated. We will definitely stop again.

Great value Winter Break deal. Room was terrific and very comfortable. Excellent food and Ales. Roaring fires and very friendly atmosphere. Can't fault the place. Try the riverside walk and a wander up Kentmere. The scenery was stunning, especially after the blizzard. The only frosty welcome was from the snowman by the front door!

Just spent a 2 night winter break and had a great time. The room was well decorated, extremely well stocked! Never seen so many milks, coffee and tea sachets! We had breakfast and dinner included in the offer and the food was excellent and huge portions. The inn has an excellent atmosphere and I'll definitely go back again. Staveley isn't too far away from Windermere and Ambleside, so getting about in The Lakes is easy.

Room Tip: There wasn't a pool or spa so Have selected an average score!

Stayed here last December and again this December. Couldnt fault anything about it. Food and beers are lovely and the rooms large and spacious. Management and staff extremely pleasant and sociable and eager to please. Great to explore the lovely countyside around. Will definately be staying again in the new year...

Room Tip: Stayed in room 1 this year which was over the kitchen and a bit noisy. Room 2 overlooking the river...

My wife and I have just stayed here for a week, having previously stayed for long weekends. My wife is a coeliac, and the staff are really helpful with gluten free options. The food and cask ales were really good, as were the breakfasts. Our room was really nice with new bathroom fittings. If you want a great place to stay, this is a fantastic choice, and in addition, Staveley is a great base for touring the lakes. As you would expect from a top notch establishment, this 'proper pub' gets 'proper busy' on most days, which says it all really.

We stayed at the Eagle and Child for two nights at the end of October.

B&B
Due to late booking we had to have a twin room instead of a double. The room was cosy and modern. It had all the usual features (TV, tea and coffee, hairdryer etc) and some lovely local photographs, available to buy from a gallery in Staveley. The room was always warm, very welcome after a day hiking in the cold, and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was modern and very clean. The breakfast was served in a very dramatic dining room and was very a good size. Alongside cereal, fruit and yoghurts you have the choice of various cooked breakfasts; I definitely recommend the Cumbrian Breakfast! The staff were always friendly and chatty and made our stay a pleasure!

Pub
As a pub the Eagle and Child is outstanding. Four rotating real ales, continental lagers and proper ciders make up an interesting selection of drinks. The food was good quality, home made pub grub, exactly what we wanted during our stay! A roaring fire helped to dry our soggy boots and warm up our hands! The pub was filled with a mixture of friendly locals and other guests/visitors. On both evenings it was packed and had a really bubbly atmosphere. If all pubs were like this one they wouldn't be shutting down!

Area
Staveley is a great spot to explore the Lakes from. Windermere is a short drive away and there are plenty of good walking in the area. The village has a nice mix of shops and pubs. The interior shop next to the pub is nice; we would suggest the short walk into the industrial estate (5 mins from the Eagle and Child) because it houses a great cycle shop, an artisan bakers, a furniture workshop, a rather nice cafe and the Hawkshead Brewery - home to great beer and tapas!

I have to wonder whether some of the reviewers actually stayed here and didn't write about the same place we stayed at. This is a proper local Inn so its busy and well...like a pub. The good thing is that unlike some pubs the rooms are freshly decorated with new bathroom fittings. The food was tasty and good value. Breakfast was generous with plenty of choice.

I would thoroughly recommend it as a good place to stay for couples though perhaps not families. Heaven knows where the comments about the place being full of miserable backwoodsmen came from....very strange.
