“OK Stay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2014

Stayed a week here whilst on business. The hotel is situated just of the main streets of the town. There is no private parking but there are many pay and display car parks nearby. It is an old style hotel and does not appear to have disabled access. The room was OK and had a four poster bed which maybe OK for some. The restaurant is in the basement and is served with a small window and low lighting. This makes it very claustrophobic. It only does breakfasts and they are very basic in comparison to other hotels/ b&b in the town. Saying all that the staff are very helpful and friendly.

We had two rooms 312 & 315, & stayed on Friday & Saturday. Absolutely no complaints was very good value, rooms comfortable, staff friendly with a great breakfast. Centrally located but away from the noise of the town.

Stayed here last weekend and it was great. The hotel is centrally located for convenience but away from the busy streets.
We had room 301 and it was fabulous.
Staff wonderfully friendly and the girl who checked us in on Saturday afternoon was excellent.
Only downside is restaurant/bar is closed at the moment. Not sure if this is just because it is out of season but I think the hotel has some work being done so may be due to that.

Stopped here in December, the staff are friendly and welcoming. Room was clean but very dated, could do with an update, there is no hotel parking but there is a pay and display car parking opposite. The hotel is situated just a few yards from the town which has plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants.

Very nice hotel in a central Ulverston town centre location. Only stayed one night but had no issues with either the room or the hotel. My wife and I found the staff to be charming and hospitable.

We stayed in room 320, situated on the top floor, which was comfortable and spacious. There was some noise from the town centre pubs until about 1pm but in my opinion this would only be an issue to a light sleeper.
Our room overlooked the rear garden which looked inviting, but was sadly to cold to use, which in summer would make a good place to sit in the evening and relax with a drink. Please bear in mind that if this hotel was situated nearer to Windermere then you would probably have to pay double the price for probably a less attentive experience.

Yes you do have to pay to park but the WI FI in the hotel is free. The breakfast was as good as any we have eaten in a hotel. Ulverston itself is worth a look around if you have time.

I would certainly stay here again and would recommend it to anyone with an open mind about staying in a market town.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the rear.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 November 2013

Stayed here on own in November. Double room was £70 per night for single occupancy.
Pleasant room, looked recently refurbished. (309).
Some, noise from room above, creaky floors - but nothing that spoilt the stay.
Breakfast was good, full English one day, mushroom and bacon. Omelette the next.
Could not fault either. Service was fine.
Would revisit, would recommend to others.
Only issue, which was not a problem for me, is that parking is in the small pay and display over the road. I got parked easily each evening. A full day parking costs £6, car park fee between. 6pm and 8 am.

Room Tip: 309 was fine.

The Lonsdale is run by a South African couple who are welcoming and helpful. I can only think that those people who diss them in previous reviews have brought their own "baggage" with them. This is after all a cheap hotel. It is nowhere near the standard of Miller Howe nor does it pretend to be. It does, however, have clean spacious rooms and a decent breakfast which is more than can be said for many others in this price range. When we arrived (a party of 6) the owners politely explained that their chef had walked out and that they could offer no bar or restaurant service. In Ulverston that causes no problem with its wealth of alternatives.
The gardens at the rear of the hotel are stunning and I plan to return in summer to take advantage of them. The rating of 4 stars is relative to the hotel's price. It deserves it.
One word of warning. Ulverston is very noisy on Friday and Saturday nights. The Lonsdale shares this problem with all the central hotels and guest houses. Expect to hear street noise until 3 or 4 in the morning!!
