“Very welcoming!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2014

I had the opportunity of staying at Newbiggin Hall for one night whilst on a business trip.

First of all, what a lovely host. A warm and friendly welcome from Avril made my short stay very homely. Not one for a cooked breakfast, I opted for the healthy option. I was greeted by a host of cereal, fruit, yoghurt, home made seeded bread (delicious!), marmalade, fresh strawberries and fresh coffee, all served in the sunny conservatory.

The guest house itself is seemingly in the middle of nowhere, although in reality, only a 5 minute drive or 10-15 minute walk into town. The benefit of the setting is of course, the magnificent views which were just perfect on a sunny June morning.

A great place to stay to explore Ulverston and the South Lakes.

Room Tip: One room has an en-suite and a 4 poster. The other two I believe share a bathroom

After spending a week long stay at this bed and breakfast I can say it has to be one of the best.
Avril, the owner, makes you feel right at home. I had scones, jam and cream waiting for me on the day of arrival . She goes the extra mile for sure , and the views are stunning. Food was wonderful the whole week of my stay . If you want good food and good service and a great view over breakfast then this is the place to go.

The house is lovely, quiet and spacious. Avril is an amazingly kind, caring and very helpful lady who could not offer to do more for us during our stay and always ensured we were as comfortable as possible and went to great lengths to ensure that our stay was as close to living at home as you could get. If you are in the Ulverston area, you must stay here! It's very peaceful, has great views of the countryside and the breakfast was fab, too!

The fact that so many of the reviews on here mention Avril by name is testament to quite how much she personally contributes to ensuring that her guests get the most from their stay! In my case, it was only through Avril’s eagerness to help that my girlfriend and I were able to have a weekend away at all! We (rather ambitiously) decided to go away for a bank holiday weekend at less than a day’s notice. Avril not only rang round the local B&Bs herself to try and find us a room, when that didn’t work she went to great lengths rearranging things so she could accommodate us herself!

That level of hospitality didn’t dip once throughout our stay. Being picked up from the station and welcomed with tea and warm scones was a delightful way to start our weekend, and wherever we planned to go Avril would always offer us a lift to help us get the most from our weekend. She was also kind enough to give us a brief tour of the surrounding area so we could get our bearings, and throughout our stay had plenty of valuable suggestions as to where we might like to visit. Avril really does do her utmost to tailor each guest’s stay to whatever they would like it to be.

Newbiggin Hall itself is a lovely building. Our room, the lounge and the conservatory were all quiet, clean, spacious and comfortable with fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. A pleasant half hour’s walk in one direction takes you to the delightful little town of Ulverston, past intriguing sights like an alpaca farm and a traditional Asian yurt, and setting off in any other direction takes you immediately into picturesque rural bliss! Whatever you plan to do with your day, there’s no better start than Avril’s full English breakfast made from locally sourced ingredients, with fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereal and the like if you still have room (or if you’re somehow able to resist the smell of her bacon)! We really can’t recommend Newbigin Hall highly enough!

Once you have met avril you will go back to Newbiggin Hall. She does all to make your stay a calm one - her kindness and attention to detail - Avril provides a holiday of relaxed pleasure. With rocking chairs in spacious rooms with views to calm the senses. Being on the northern edge of ulverston its ideal for the western - central @ southern fells with the added bonus of walking from the doorstep. Avril provides all the local places of interest and places to eat - of which there are plenty, Janet@Ian Sheffield stayed three nights in april 2014 - and will return.

We decided to go to Lake district for the easter break. Less than a couple of hours after making the booking, we received an lovely email from Avril giving us all the directions to reach her place (a gps is however recommended in the region as finding your ways might sometimes be tricky for non-local people). When we arrived after a long drive from Birmingham,home-made scones and tea were waiting for us!

The house is situated in the country side, no noise or traffic during the night and you can even see the stars at night from the veranda. Bedding and bathroom are very comfy and well-maintained.

Avril is very caring and always good with an advise, let alone a fantastic cooker (we recommend our full English breakfast made from local products).

Overally a wonderful stay!

I stay regularly at Newbiggin Hall and have done so since last December and I intend to continue staying there. Avril the owner takes all possible steps to make you feel welcome and comfortable. The bedrooms are spacious and well presented and equally the lounge and large conservatory area all with breath taking views of the surrounding countryside. Avril also likes to make sure you leave for the day's exploring with a hearty cooked breakfast - or indeed something lighter if preferred. I would without hesitation recommend Newbiggin Hall it's a great place to base yourself when exploring the Lake District.
