“What A Find”
Reviewed 14 July 2013

Booked in for two nights stay as my brother in law was taking part in the Wasdale fell race. Had a warm welcome from Andrew and shown our rooms, my BIL in a single room and my husband and I in twin room. Burnthwaite is a working farm and located in an awesome spot with breathtaking views. The building is full of character dating back to the 16th century with small quirks like walls not straight or the floors for that matter, all adds to the experience. I was looked after as to my vegan diet with soya milk being supplied and breakfast was hearty, which was needed with the fell race for BIL and for myself and husband walking Great Gable to meet BIL with refreshments. Andrew is a great character, hardworking and multi tasking, one minute he is out on the quad bike, then haymaking and then next he is making the breakfast. And I cannot miss mentioning Billy their Patterdale terrier, what a dog, he walks down to the pub the Wasdale Head Inn on his own which is about half a mile at lunchtime and evenings hoping for scraps. He was there when we were and had our leftovers. We were in the guest lounge on our last evening, when we heard a scrunching of gravel on the lane and who comes walking down but Billy on his way back from the pub. This is an excellent B&B and although BIL said he would not take part in the fell race next year (he finished 20 mins faster than last year) he is already talking about doing it again, so we will be back.

Step into Burnthwaite Farm and you instantly relax! No mobile signal, no noise except for the sounds of a working farm or the crackling of coal on the wood burning stove!!
Sounds idyllic? That's because it is!
You relax more in 3 days here than in 7 days anywhere else - the staff are fab and friendly and can't do enough to help, rooms are clean and are just what you need after a day out exploring the lakes!

Just don't tell too many people about this place - let it be our little secret!

Just returned from a three night break at Burnthwaite Farm, stunning peaceful location with many beautiful walks on the doorstep.
Working Farm, really easy going and friendly, took our two dogs with us.
Farmhouse warm and cosy + deliver a hearty breakfast each morning at a very reasonable price.
Local Inn a short stroll away, for a nice evening meal and real ale on tap.
Had a wonderful stay.

Room Tip: Plenty of hot water, bathrooms fine.

Stayed here with friends for a 2 night walking getaway. I usually stay in Ambleside when visiting the lakes, wow, how far removed this is from my usual stay. If you don't mind a remote location then this is the place for you. Nestled at the base of Great Gable and Scarfel Pike it's pretty stunning. The accommodation was good with an excellent breakfast, which always helps. No TV which was an initial shock but more than made up with a short stroll to the pub. If looking to stay over without the luxuries of other hotels and guest houses, this is definitely the place. I will most certainly return at some point.

Room Tip: Some have ensuite, but the seperate bathrooms are perfectly fine with big baths.

I have stayed at Burnthwaite Farm b&b on many occasions, at different times of the year over a five year period. That in itself probably says it all! Burnthwaite is situated in probably one of the most remote locations in England, nestled at the the base of Great Gable. It is stunning. Great for photography - mountains, lake, not forgeting the Herdwicks! The accomodation is clean & tidy. Cozy lounge with a stove to keep you warm. Huge baths and copious supply of hot water (I bring Radox : ) The breakfast is excellent. Everyone at the farm is friendly and helpful. I have just been for a weekend with friends who also think it's wonderful and we will be going back again soon.
