“Fantastic!”

Walking down from the mountains a glimmer of light could be seen from the window of the Wasdale Head Inn. Couldn't resist a pint of ale to finish the day off. Fantastic place, great atmosphere, excellent beer and to round it off, very friendly staff who made us very welcome. A must after a days walk or if you are just passing. Thank You.

My friend and I stayed here for 1 night on 31/10/13. After a tortuous journey acress Wrynose and Hard Knot passes (which my friend executed with the minimum of fuss, although I did notice beads of sweat upon her brow!) we arrived at the Inn. What a great place this is; the food is plentiful and scrummy, the beds (with their huge fluffy pillows and duvets) very comfortable and the public areas, with their wood panelling and log fires very, very atmospheric. One can only imagine the stories these rooms have heard over the years. One of the things we liked best was being able to look through the visitors books which go back to the 1800s; the clothes climbers wore in those days looked SO uncomfortable and cumbersome!
I would definitely recommend this place....just try to avoid getting there via the passes unless you have nerves of steel!

Self catering at the Wasdale Head Inn comes complete with your own neighbourhood ram (named by us as Barry (aka Barry White)) who gazed at us through our lounge window when we were in situ. Good accommodation, clean and warm and kitchen well supplied with utensils and necessities. We ate our evening meal at the Inn and found the menu to be varied enough to satisfy all likes. Plenty of food (rather too much sometimes) and good service. Ideal for walking and a bath available to soak in afterwards.

Stayed here for two nights in August 2013, when mounting our first ever assault on Scafell Pike. We were in one of the newly decorated superior rooms on the ground floor. The room was fantastic, beautifully decorated, and had a door out onto a private garden area. The bathroom was superb and the complimentary toiletries were lovely.

We were welcomed warmly on arrival by Sue who was really friendly, and proved to be indispensable throughout our entire stay - she is extremely helpful, knowledgable, and a credit to the hotel.

The breakfasts were fantastic during our stay, setting us up well for the long and arduous walks we had planned. We also ordered packed lunches which were great, containing a huge sandwich, packet of Monster Munch (other brands of crisps are available! :)), piece of fruit, a Mars or Snickers, and a drink.

We ate in Ritson's Bar both evenings and found the food delicious. We would recommend the various special sausages, steak and ale pie, or the daube of beef - all of which were very welcome, hearty, tasty meals after a day on the fells. The selection of local ales was also very good.

We also visited the Barn Door Shop and purchased one of the cute Miss Ewe Sheep (Hand-made by the lady in the shop from local Herdwick Sheep wool, and all individually named). Percival (A Mr Tup) has taken up residence in our conservatory!

Given that Wasdale Head is (literally) the only place to stay and eat in the immediate Wastwater area (there is only one road in and out), it would be fairly easy to allow standards to slip due to the captive audience, however this is most definitely not the case. The accommodation, staff, food (and beer!) are all of a high standard. Highly recommended!

Good stuff

l stayed at the Wasdale Head Inn for three days for a walking holiday. The welcome was by very friendy staff and showed me to my room. The room was a single as ordred and had been recntly upgraded and newly decorated. The room was spacious for a single with great views out on to the fells.
There is a drying room for your damp/wet clothes/kit etc which was very useful. For those wishing to climb/walk Scafell Pike you are only 100yds from the start point and as equal distance for other walks as well. For those who cannot live without the internet there is WiFi in the residents areas which reached also to my room. The food in the bar is very good.Just the type of food to replenish those lost calories, but tasty as well.Good selection of beers.

Not so good stuff
The residents entrance is a bit tired and could do with a lick of paint and a tidy up, as is the residents lounge and residents bar,but that is just nick picking.

As far as i am concerned it is a 'Ronseal' Hotel,it does exactly what it says on the tin !

What a fantastic place. Only there for two nights but can’t wait to return. The restaurant appeared to serve excellent food in humongous sized portions. I was only there for the camping and hill climbing, but the evenings atmosphere was certainly something to get down the hill for. Excellent pub food – nothing to complain or gripe about.

Will I be going back?

You're damn right I will! :-) :-) :-)

Room Tip: Sorry, can't comment on the quality of the rooms because I was camping, but can say that the peo...

My wife and I spent 3 days in the self catering apartments. We used Ritsons every evening for meals and found the food to be very good. The fish and chips were especially good. There was a great selection of local ales which is certainly an important factor for me. I think I counted at least 5 different ales on tap every night with a couple of changes too. The staff were very nice and showed a high degree of tolerance when guests repeatedly kept disturbing the air flow to the wood burning stove by closing windows. The location basically can't be beat. We will definately return.
