Felldyke Bunkhouse
Reviewed 4 August 2014

Recently stayed at the bunkhouse as a group of 14 for a stag do. Having looked far and wide for good quality accommodation in the lakes that is suitable for a stag do – albeit a group of 30 somethings not intent on destruction but making sure we had somewhere comfortable to sleep at night!! – this is by far the best place I found, and I would certainly recommend it for group accommodation. The bunkhouse is large, comfortable and has really good facilities – five bathrooms in total plus a good kitchen etc. There is plenty of room in and around the building, which is pretty secluded so making noise at night wasn’t an issue, and a ‘fire pit’ which although slightly on the small side was still good for a camp fire. No BBQ facilities on site but nothing to stop you bringing your own or disposables. Also, made the booking directly through the owner (Rachel) who was very polite and helpful, unlike some experiences I have had when booking this sort of accommodation.

We were a group of 9 who were visiting the North Lakes for a stag weekend with outdoor activities and happened across this gem. It is about a 12 minute drive south of Cockermouth and a short walk from Cogra Moss reservoir.
The bunkhouse actually fits over 25 and our group could not believe we had the run of it to ourselves. The presence of 3 fridges, 2 dishwashers etc showed that we were a group on the small side.
The building is a converted pump house and has character as well as being clean and spacious.
As the location was isolated, we were able to have fairly loud music inside the bunkhouse playing out whilst a bonfire was going in the firepit without disturbing anyone (or so we believe). In fact after coming back from our dinner in Cockermouth at 1am on Saturday night/Sunday evening (booked as a 'school reunion') we did so until dawn.
The location is good for walking, activities (we did ghyll scrambling and rock climbing through a company the owners recommended) and probably group activities with an educational element as there is a large open downstairs area.
Whilst we were a stag weekend, we had some sensibilities, and so were able to get back the deposit. It would not be a good venue for wreckers, nutters, or those too hungover to tidy up the venue the next morning.

Overall, highly recommended and very good value too.

If you like walking, cycling, fishing or just a get together with friends then this is the perfect spot. Unlike the Windermere / Ambleside area of the Lake District, the Northern Lakes remain much quieter and this great bunkhouse is a real gem as a base for hill walking. It sleeps 23, really well equipped compare to some of the other basic camping barns in the Lakes, with dishwashers, good showers, drying cupboard and comfy bunkbeds. They've also got a new lounge area which they didn't have last time I stayed. I've been and stayed a few times now and I'll be going back!

Room Tip: Put the snorer in the Ground Floor Room!
