I've been coming to Cumbria on business every week since January, staying at the Premier Inn in Howgate, and (as anyone would) finally had enough of the Brewers Fayre. The Galloping Horse is very nearby (you can get the 30/31/301 there from the hotel) with an extensive menu freshly cooked, equivalent in price to the Brewers Fayre but so much better. Has free parking but the car park is often full. I would recommend booking, especially during holiday season. I'd especially recommend booking by phone as a certain member of staff denied existence of the contact form on their website (already had a response from the Galloping Horse about this, the waitress in question might now know about it!). Food is always good, with massive portions (especially the burgers) and the desserts are great too.

Do bar menu with nibbles, pizzas and light bites , they had a special on for pizza for two with chips and a drink so we called in waited nearly an hour and we did ask twice where the food was only to be told that your not priority in the bar and have to wait till the the rest of the pub has been served. When the food did arrive it was nice but the barman put the lights out as the locals were watching football. This was just rude dispacablw behaviour and we have never gone back.

Dear guest,

We are very sorry to hear this, we are naturally shocked that you suggest a member of staff would say you are not a priority. All of our customers are a priority and we would be very interested if you could contact us privately so we can establish who this member of staff was and remind them of their duty towards our customers. You do not state when it was you visited, it may of been some time ago, again we would appreciate it if you could contact us directly and we will happily look further into your comments.

We are also sorry to hear that the lights were turned off. Shannons bar is there as a local bar and we always screen all the live sporting events in there, perhaps we should have advised you of this and offered you a seat somewhere else in the pub.

Having visited the Galloping Horse not long after it's refurbishment I honestly wasn't that impressed and wondered why the car park was always so full. Perhaps we had an off day because we visited again out of curiosity and what a pleasant surprise. The staff were friendly, the setting is lovely and the food was delicious. We will definitely return.
