Very warm and friendly staff, good menu choice and the food was top class, the range of veg with my meal was good, did have to ask for more gravy only because it was so nice.
Will go back again soon

We were in the royal Oak on Saturday evening and had a wonderful meal. What the previous reviewer said just isn't true - we sat next to the bar - there was no lad or louts just a peaceful, excellent meal with attentive staff. We have booked to go again.

We visited here with friends on a Saturday evening to find the bar area quite busy (a good sign) so we decided to eat here. The food was amazing I simply could not fault it. It was all fresh and very flavoursome. Our only problem that dampened the evening was the lad behind the bar who was only interested in the loud louts at the bar. Who were swearing and fooling about!! It was like we were in a lunatic asylum, how can middle aged men behave like this in a country pub!! They belong in a zoo. Im rating you as average the food deserves a 10 surely these loud men cannot be aloud out every day so don't be put off well worth a visit for the food alone.

Your account of your supposed experience on saturday night does not match our, or our diners on that night, recollection of the behaviour cited . We do not have a 'lad' serving behind the bar
The bar was quiet on saturday with only a maximum of five drinkers spread over the night.

We were looking for somewhere to eat in Ashbourne and thought we'd call in here on the way. So glad we did. The food was excellent! (and reasonably priced). The member of staff who served us was friendly and there was a good atmosphere. The pub was lovely and clean. We'll definitely come back when we're next in the area.

We popped in for dinner while visiting Dovedale. The owner was extremely welcoming and served us at the table. We sat by a lovely warm fire. Best of all the food was delicious, hearty home cooked fare with a wide ranging menu for all tastes. We had lovely salmon en croute and juicy well cooked rump steak. The desserts were also delicious and as good as any five star restaurant. I highly reccomend the chocolate truffle and the creme brûlée.
