“A gem of a place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 March 2013

This is a real old fashioned pub and very cosy with log fires. The food is second to none. Real home made food and very tasty. You have to wait a while but isn't that a sign of freshly made food. You get far too much but some how manage to finish it. Most of us even had pudding which was again very good. Service was excellent. The only drawback were the toilets which could do with updating and a fresh lick of paint. It's probably best to book at the weekend as it appeared very busy. I would recommend this pub to anyone who likes the atmosphere of days gone by and good wholesome food.

i knew this used to be a busy restaurant so i booked a week in advance by e-mail,this was acknowledged within 48 hours and then i phoned a few days later just to make sure that the room i had booked to go in was ok,,on arrival i was told i would have to go in a different room by a young woman who was sitting behind the bar who had no customer relations with her attitude, anyway we did sit where i requested.this over the carvery was fairly good the well done beef was not well done at all,as they give you a choice of beefs as well as pork ,lamb , etc.the choice of veg was very good also the choice of greens i like the touch of small sausages cut into slices and the potato wedges.if you go in winter take extra jumper as it was cold although they had a small woodburner all in all but have had better for the price

tend to visit here more for lunches and never ever walked away feeling hungry. The menu is great and provides a fantastic range of food. Service can sometimes be a little slow but if I'm not driving that isnt a problem as I'll just have another great ale while we are waiting! Lovely cosy building as well. Love it

I took my daughter for a meal there on Sunday. I had booked a table, one would expect a warm welcome being the service industry and all, the first comment we got was the table is booked again at 4pm so you'll have to finished by then. Nice. The service was painfully slow. The staff must hate their jobs because they all look miserable. The food was equally disappointing Brie in beer batter, haggis in beer batter, too much batter heavy and so laiden with oil it overwhelmed the taste of anything else. Two fillet steaks not cheap, I did ask at the bar if the chef knew how to do a blue steak they said yes, he did'nt. one was medium rare the other well done. They were sent back. The two portions of chips consisted of one portion with a portion of boiled potatoes and sorry looking veg. massive onion rings that looked lovely but the once again the batter was so thick and heavy it was full of oil, yuk. Didn't bother with a pudding or coffee. A real shame the food used to be really good here under the previous owners. And as for the staff, get some that smile.

Booked this for a business trip because I'm fed up with mainstream chain hotels. Proved a challenge for the sat nav but was worth the crawl around dark rural lanes. Its a very old building with lots of little nook and crannies, seemed to be a blazing woodburner in each corner. The rooms are comfortable, the bed very comfy and bathrooms reasonable. The big draw is the food and atmosphere in the warm bar areas. The staff were welcoming and friendly despite comments in other reviews. Shame the weather was poor as the views from here should be fantastic, be a great place in the summer for lunch sat in the garden.

Decided to treat my wife and I to a weekend away here and certainly was not disappointed, this is a true country pub restaurant in the sticks and people only go because they know that it is good service great food set in a rural location away from it all with a fab selection of real ales wines and spirits - the cosy atmosphere of locals and regulars who come to take warmth by the open fires or taste the superbly kept real ales and the food we experience sandwiches for saturday lunch and a great meal for 3 on Saturday night in the restaurant and then Sunday lunch for 4 all family member visitors also thoroughly enjoyed their visit - this place is a must and will certainly be going back - hope to see it decked out for Xmas 2012 - you must go and experience this place the staff are friendly and helpful

Room Tip: Try and get room 2 or 8 the latter is a four poster with view over the Amber Valley district, on thi...

Stayed in the cottage on a weekend and was disappointed by the interiors, general decor and staff attitude.
The cottage itself was spacious enough for 4 people if it is only to sleep - beautiful views from a little private terrace. The housekeeping staff were quick to come and set up the room for 4 people as well as letting us check in early.
I would recommend the pub as it had a great atmosphere on a saturday afternoon although the staff customer service leaves much to be desired.
Food was slow, breakfast was provided as if it was a great inconvenience to be serving our party, staff were heard talking about guests the next morning in a public space and generally were rude on checkout.
The interiors were shabby and the whole place could do with a good steam clean.
If the service came with a smile and the place was spruced up a bit it could be a lovely hotel.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The earliest reference to a building here is 1528 – this would have been a parlour, hall, buttery, dairy, and kitchen. In 1690, the building became the property of the Hurt family, which then became an alehouse and soon after known as the Olde Brown Bear Inn.  The Bear Inn, as it became known by 1735, lay on the Birmingham-Derby-Chesterfield-Sheffield turnpike road…..by 1764 it had become a prominent coaching Inn. The names and dates of all Innkeepers and owners from 1735 – 2008 is listed in the entrance hall of the Bear. Just standing beneath the beams of this fine English country Inn invites history to wash over you – sampling a pint or two of fine English ale helps the process! The fame of The Bear has spread across various counties and continents in recent years, mainly as a Gastro pub of note, a hotel, carvery & real ale venue. Real Food, Real Ale, Real People, Real Derbyshire – can be completed with Real History. The Bear can truly boast to be one of Derbyshire’s oldest & most renowned Inn & Hotels.  ... more   less
