Stayed here for a wedding, food and setting was nice although bar area was very small. There was only one member of bar staff serving, which is poor for a large wedding party, hence a timely wait to be served. Stayed for one night, the room was very small, shabby, noisy and dirty. The bathroom smelt as though it had just been used. For a four star hotel you would expect quality in many areas, but when the basics are not even fulfilled such as hygiene and cleanliness, it makes one question why this hotel deserves such a high ratiing.

Since this hotel is described as "4 star" we had certain expectations for our stay. Our double room was located in an outside courtyard where your front door opens to outside and not a hallway. This in itself wasn't a huge problem but we hadn't been informed during booking that our room wouldn't be within the main hotel itself.

The room was fairly small and the furnishing didn't scream "4 star" hotel to me. The carpet was cheap and a bit worn, lamps were dusty and skirting boards were scuffed. The level of cleanliness was fine but the overall feel of the room felt more like a budget hotel. One major issue we had was the room was freezing cold. There was one radiator in our room which we turned to "max" and it struggled to heat the room...no thermostat! Worst of all the ensuite bathroom had NO radiator, heated towel rail or any heat source whatsoever! It was bitterly cold! Bathroom was clean but again finishings such as peeling silicon let it down.

If you visit this hotel you'll have to be the "sharing" type....the walls in our room were paper thin! I could clearly hear the conversations of people in the next room and their TV. I'm sure they could hear ours as well!

When trying to order a taxi at reception the member of staff couldn't get through to any taxi companys and so we ended up driving to our dinner reservation. We had asked the receptionist to write down some local taxi numbers for us to get home...and we later realised why she couldn't get through earlier....she has given us 2 wrong numbers with the wrong area codes!

What really left a bad taste in our mouths was trying to order room service. When ordering a meal from the "After Hours, 24 Hour" menu we were rudely told our dish wasnt on the menu. When we informed the person on the phone that the menu in our room clearly states a list of different dishes, the person remarked "I can assure you it isn't...we only have sandwiches after hours". The menu in our room was obviously out of date but we were not impressed with how we were spoken to.

Was an OK place to "crash" but not the lux hotel we were expecting.

We stayed here on two separate occasions with our dog. We had two differerent courtyard rooms, both very quiet. The first was definitely in need of some TLC and the cleaning was poor. The second was a lovely room. The dog was not allowed into any part of the hotel. The hotel is very 'country house' and cozy. There were not many guests while we were there - had it been busier, the public rooms might have struggled to accommodate everyone.
The location is lovely, breakfast was good. We thought dinner was overpriced and disappointing, although the presentation was good. The staff were young and poorly trained. The local pubs do not do food. There is, however, a very good Italian (a bit pricey) just up the main road.

Me and my husband had our wedding here on the 21st August, 2010 and couldn't praise the staff enough :)
Although Makeney Hall went through some changes (and many wedding co-ordinators) throughout the time between booking our wedding and our big day, everything went to plan in the end and everyone had a fantastic time.
The food was lovely for both the wedding breakfast and evening buffet and Richard the Master of Ceremonies couldn't do enough for us, he even carried the train of my dress and helped to ensure it looked perfect for our photographs.
We would definately recommend Makeney Hall for a wedding venue or any special event :) Thankyou to all the staff for all your hard work,
Mr and Mrs Nightingale
