Holiday Inn Express East Midlands Airport

Reviewed 24 October 2013

Stayed here on 23rd October prior to a business meeting, check in was dreadfully slow as staff chose to serve bar customers before checking folk in.

Allocated to a clean room, however a bit shabby in bits and could do with a refresh of curtains and carpets etc, with a whole 2 teabags is a bit miserable.

On a positive note, bar not over priced and good selection of drinks, and a pool table, how many Hi Expresses have a pool table - good call..

Breakfast, well as my headline says it is what it is and was what it was, whilst I appreciate there are hot items on offer, sausage, beans and scrambled eggs don't float my boat - nothing wrong with the hot options, but tinned peaches! Tinned peaches are a desert and not breakfast materials - unlike other Sommerston Hotels, I missed the Grapefruit, perhaps this could be introduced as not everyone wants tinned fruit in syrup, but there was also sliced tom & jerry cheese, and yoghurts - so fair choices, just lose the pudding for breakfast.
.
At check-out, I was informed of the car park charge, strange my car was parked up at Glasgow Airport and I indicated at check in I had no car, hmmm I wonder how this happened, must have been an error because when questioned it was removed without question or checking check in card – surely not underhand tactics – surely not, I hope not..

Stayed one night and won't be staying again. No bath in room, noisy air conditioning, extremely uncomfy sofa bed which had a large metal hinge protruding from the side, ridiculous prices at the bar and ripped off with the '20% off early bird menu' .
On the plus side its clean and the free wifi is fast and available anywhere or it'd be a 1 star for me.
Avoid room 107 which is above the entrance and you can hear the door opening and closing all day and night.
Car Parking £4 for the night ? Where else could we park?
Too far from the terminal to walk
Try the Raddison Blu - worth a bit extra for a lot better nights sleep

Room Tip: Avoid room 107 it's above the automatic door and bangs all night

Dear Richard

I am disappointed to read your review following your recent stay and read your comments with interest.

Our electric doors have been in place since February this year and it is the first comment that we have had as to hearing them from the bedrooms - we will monitor this going forward.

All of the hotels in the airport area charge for parking - and we are cheaper than the competitors.

Kind regards

A very pleasant stay in a clean hotel, with friendly staff. A good choice at breakfast, rooms well contained with good facilities(if a little on the small side for a family room). With the good price deal for room, breakfast and wifi, HIE is now our preffered hotel when staying away.

We weren't flying anywhere just taking advantage of a good offer for a couple of nights to visit relatives in the area. The Receptionist were friendly and registration quick and efficient. There was a lift but we found the stairs nearer to our room. The room was clean and for saying we were so near the airport we never heard a plane at all, very quiet. The buffet, help yourself breakfast was good for an English style breakfast, although my husband said the scrambled egg was rubbery, but there was no cheese etc. if you wanted a Continental style breakfast with your croissant or roll. The choice of drinks and cereals was excellent and all-in-all we had a very pleasant stay.

The room was spacious and clean. The reception staff friendly and any questions we had were answered . We felt totally at ease and slept well feeling confident that at 4am the next morning our free taxi would be waiting for us to take us to the airport ...... And it was.

Holiday Inn Express helped us to start our holiday stress free. We will definitely use them again.

The hotel is clean and comfortable. It is easy access from the M1 and East Midlands airport.

The worst thing is the breakfast. Apparently it is 'free' but I would rather pay for a decent breakfast. Scrambled eggs were rubber, the baked beans were more sauce than beans and the sausages were ok. Croissants were cooked under the heater so very crispy. Coffee was absolutely awful. I tried the Starbucks coffee machine and it was better than the morning coffee but wouldn't call it Starbucks.

I ended up eating frostees and toast for four days as it was the safest option...

Considering the price I would most likely stay here again but avoid the breakfast!

Dear Timothy

Thank you for your review following you recent 4 night stay here at the Hotel. I am sorry that the breakfast was not to your satisfaction, I have given this feedback to those concerned and would hope to see an improvement on your next visit.

The Starbuck vending machine is a recent addition, and is fully stocked with Starbucks branded items so should be exactly as you would get in their outlets - again I will feedback this information to the Brand Guardian who looks after our outlet.

Stayed here 2 weeks ago for an overnight stay at the airport for travelling the next day. Very comfortable and clean room, very friendly and polite staff, quiet surroundings as about a mile from the airport.
Overall, very happy. Would definitely stay again and would recommend to anyone.
