Donington Manor Hotel

This place is hard to review. It could really do with a major makeover. Carpets are threadbare, don't match and covered in tape in places. The bedrooms are very old fashioned and the floors creak like mad. On the plus side, staff are very friendly, the bed was comfy and the breakfast was great. Can't comment on the evening meal as a private function had booked the restaurant, so, like it or not, I had to go out. Luckily there is a great Indian restaurant not far away (not the one opposite)
Would I stay there again? Probably, but I might look around and see what else is available in the price range.

Room Tip: Not sure if there was a swimming pool or fitness centre so marked as average.

We booked with a couple of weeks notice to meet our daughter for Sunday lunch at the beginning of December. It was her birthday, and it was about half way between where we both live.
The meal was very good, which we knew would be the case, as we done the same thing the year before.
However, we had not factored in the Christmas trade, and we found ourselves seated in a large function room which had been set with tables. The main restaurant room was fully booked for a family gathering. The room we were in looked rather uncosy, with carpets hastily laid on the floor, but not covering it completely. It was all a bit ad hoc.
Service was very good, and we took coffee in the lounge, which was fine.
Perhaps a little more effort could be made in future to make alternative accommodation a bit more festive. It's a popular venue.p

Room Tip: Book early for Christmas!

Went to the hotel for christmas dinner. Its beautiful building and the staff are super friendly and helpful. The food was very tastey and well presented with good choice but all the old people were moaning about the veg not being soft enough!
We've been to a few events at the hotel and there are never enough staff on at the bar. The toilets are not in keeping with what the hotel claims to be, there was no seat on the toilet and it had been like that since 3 days before, there was no lime at the bar, the glasses were warm and so on... It could be a brilliant place but always seems to be badly run and managed in the essentials, but the events lady is great in a difficult environment.

I attend the hotel regularly with a small group of friends and generally receive good service and enjoy good quality food even though the chef is catering for up to 20 people at any one time as well as catering for other hotel guests. I have also attended for party and wedding functions. The staff are friendly and helpful and this hotel is a good long established good quality venue for Castle Donington.

My husband has already submitted a full and frank review of our stay at this hotel on Christmas night but I wanted to add my personal view too. I agree with his review mostly, but would say that I thought the decoration was fine. From a female point of view, although soap, shampoo, shower gel etc were provided, there was no shower cap. This would not have been a problem if the shower head could have been hand held, but it was fixed and therefore taking a shower without getting your hair wet was not possible.

I was really pleased with Room 15, it was spacious, comfortable and warm (with the fan heater) and I slept perfectly in the four poster bed which was nearly as comfortable as the Tempur mattress we have at home. The seating area was lovely and it was nice to sit and watch TV on Christmas night not sitting/lying on the bed as would happen in most hotels.

With regard to our Christmas lunch, I again agree with my husband's comments that the meal was adequate, but would also add that it was a bit disappointing not to have "pigs in blankets" - an absolute essential for Christmas lunch!

Finally, I would like to say that excellent customer service was given by all the staff, but especially by Aaron on Reception. His customer service skills are superb and he, personally made our Christmas/Wedding Anniversary stay at the hotel very pleasant.

The trouble with eating out on Christmas day is that if you are the driver you MUST remain sober, and lets face it who wants to stay stone cold sober on Christmas day well neither my wife or I for sure so we decided to have lunch and stay over for the night.
The Christmas dinner was "OK" nothing brilliant, but nothing really to moan about either, apart from the price tag which is high wherever you go to eat on Christmas day, and only to be expected so no real complaints there, with the wine prices being average too!

A bottle of wine and some liqueurs later we sort of staggered to our room, the one with the four poster and the large flat screen telly, well you do need that on Christmas day a large flat screen telly i mean, if you want to watch Downton Abbey don't you?

i must say we had checked out this room the week earlier; when we visited for lunch as we only live 15 miles away, and the room seemed pleasant and spacious enough to swing a cat. The decoration throughout is in need of some attention, as is the heating system. The central heating wasn't working. This was clearly something they were well aware of as a fan heater was supplied!

We fancied a sandwich at nine'ish that evening rang room service and was offered a choice of two fillings Cheese and Onion and Chicken Tikka that was it, but I suppose it is Christmas; however there again this hotel boasts Three Stars, so a bit disappointed on that level...

The four poster bed had a good mattress, enough pillows, clean sheets, so with the assistance of some Christmas cheer I slept like the proverbial log!

The Bathroom was adequate, although I personally hate wooden toilet seats and dislike them even more when they are loose in the fittings, as they were in this case, however a good shower and loads of hot water white fluffy towels made up for that minor shortcoming.

The breakfast room was again adequate, although when we arrived there was not a cleared table available so we did have to wait a few minutes. The breakfast room itself and attached to a small kitchen where the staff could be heard chattering away about this and that and from which an adequate cooked breakfast came forth, and with cereals and fruit juices being available with coffee and tea there again was little to complain about but little to shout about either.
The bonus for us to this hotel was one of cost £59.00 for a double room B&B on Christmas day so definitely good value for money and no complaints on that, and as such I suppose you do get what you pay for.

Overall this hotel is not brilliant, but far from awful too. The staff that were on duty were courteous and attentive, and as a place to rest for a night or two you wont go far wrong; that said with a little attention this place could and should be a lot more but that would need an attention to detail and probably some investment, which is usually the case. So stop here don't expect the Ritz and be happy it isn't Fawlty Towers and be happy it fits somewhere in between.

Room Tip: Room 15 Four poster Bed and decent size flat screen telly!

Stayed here for a wedding down the road. The staff were very friendly on arrival and sorted out our taxi to the wedding. The room was a real let down. Everything creaked or banged when you went near it. You could hear everything in the corridor and upstairs. When the heating came on during the night, the pipes would bang and rattle. Got about 30 mins sleep all night. Over priced overall and wouldn't stay there again.
