“Great well priced food, good service and great wi-fi”
Reviewed 9 May 2014

Basically we needed a good dinner and wi-fi for business.
We got both.
No rush either, very relaxed and the wi-fi is a secure text back code link from O2

The staff were helpful and unobtrusive and the meal was piping hot, a must from my wife and daughter.

Guinness on tap too and it's very cold. Most excellent.

“Poor service”
Reviewed 8 May 2014

Food average but expensive, service lacking in attention and care. One beer was off and of three other different beers tried in our group, they were all flat. White wine was also deemed very poor

“Better ”
Reviewed 24 April 2014 via mobile

This was our second visit and it was much improved. The seating was still awkward in places, but we managed to get a decent table. The service was excellent and the food nicely presented, tasty and plenty of it. The Eton mess was one of the best I have had. Hope The Castle stays this way.

“We all enjoyed our meal once again”
Reviewed 18 April 2014

My wife was born and bred in Castleton and our family still visit several times a year and usually eat at The Castle. On our latest visit it was quite busy which did seem to have effected the time it took for our food to arrive after ordering but this was not a problem as we enjoyed some good drinks (nice real ale for me) and time was not an issue for us. I have only ever had one meal which I would class as sub-standard and this was was several years ago. Our last few visits have been enjoyed by all family members. The men often have one of the special meat pies on offer which are always really tasty. The food is freshly prepared, hot and tasty. It is also reasonably priced. The Castle can be quite a tourist venue and sometimes very busy, but catch it at the right time and it is well worth the money. We will be eating there again on our next visit and looking forward to it.

“Two different experiences”
Reviewed 11 April 2014

Went here twice in one week - why? Because the first visit was SO good, how could we not?!

The first visit was with family - every member of staff we encountered was super-friendly, fun and efficient. We got quick service, knowledgeable waiter, and excellent food. The seasonal salads were enormous, which is great because too often a salad is disappointing - I was left very full after the salmon salad. Fish and chips were great - large portion and made to perfection. It was Vintage Pie Day on this first visit and the beef and merlot pie looked amazing and did not seem to disappoint my step-dad! The cost is reflective of the great service and quality menu but was still in the realms of pub food prices. Really enjoyed everything about the meal and felt like we got free entertainment from the waiting staff, who all seemed to enjoy working there and enjoy interacting with their customers.

The second visit a couple of days later was with friends. The atmosphere was entirely different. The service was very slow - so much so it made us late for where we needed to be next. The food was still exceptional (had the lamb burger from the Specials menu and it was delicious) but we waited a long time to order (despite it being after the lunchtime rush and not at all busy) and waited even longer to receive our order. Also waited to pay when we really needed to hurry. The staff were still very nice and clearly enjoyed having a laugh with us. It just all ran so slowly.

Although this review may not help you know what to expect in terms of service, I feel very safe in saying you will enjoy the food, the prices are very reasonable and even when slow, the staff are really lovely! I will certainly give them the benefit of the doubt and go again.
