Because it was a Vantage Inn we went for an evening meal to celebrate.
The food took ages to arrive, even though the restaurant was very quiet. When it did, it didn't live up to the menu description. We were hungry, though disappointed.
My husbands pint of beer had something on the edge of the glass that looked like a deal slug or even worse, a snot! I felt really sick. Whilst the waitress said sorry, "it must have come out of the dishwasher", it was an awful experience! We were given a fresh pint, but still charged, which we thought was awful. Surely, quality standards should be met.
We were extremely disappointed with our meal. The staff were actually very nice, they couldn't have been better.
Would we go back - definitely not - very disappointing.
The ladies loos were dirty and had no toilet paper at 7 at night.
If you want a relaxing pint, go here, otherwise, don't eat there - it was a truly bad experience. We gave them 2 because of the staff.

Vintage Inn group you did it again, you have some of the nicest pub locations but your food does not live up to even Yates basic standard. We had friends staying in Castleton and they invited us over for a meal at the Castle Hotel, we have been to many Vintage Inn pubs including this one B4 and food here has been acceptable on previous occasions, not this time though. Under normal circumstances we would have complained but having been invited by friends didn't think it was appropriate. The starter bread an oil was very good but the signature steak pie was tasteless, the chips looked as though they had been fried twice though the cheese cake also was OK. It seems like everything that requires cooking fails miserably, several remarks about the main course were made by the rest of our party. We paid on average £24 per person, our money would have been better spent at Wetherspoons and a comparable meal cooked to near perfection would have been less than £15 per person. This is not the first poor meal we've had at this group of pubs, the worst being Fox House just a couple of miles away. On this occasion we did complain but despite promises to put things right the area manager did not fulfill promises made. Usually in these circumstances we give the company chance to put things right, before leaving poor feedback but given past experience here you have it, we will now vote with our feet, though i do intend to contact the area manager an director of the group.

Dirty tables outside which were only cleaned after asking (twice).

Microwave Chips (supposedly gourmet and extra to ordinary microwave chips).

Microwave peas more useful as a weapon than edible..

Pie with a massive crust but hardly any filling.

Give it a miss and use the Nags or the Bulls in the village.

We visit the Peak District regularly in our caravan, and having been to Castleton several times in the last 4 years, The Castle is definitely one of our favourite places to go. The decor inside the pub is lovely. Very rustic, cosy and homely. The beer garden out the back has fantastic views of the Peaks and Peveril Castle. Even more beautiful when the sun is shining! We've eaten here quite a few times and the food has always been enjoyable and cooked and presented to a good standard. Really good pub grub. Most times that we visit, we take our 2 dogs with us and the staff are very accommodating and friendly and will allow them inside once they have stopped serving food. A great pub which I'm sure we will visit time and time again.
