The Castle is a fantastic old pub in an even better setting, we travelled out from Sheffield but met friends from Derby and Manchester. After a day's walking in the Peak District we enjoyed a great meal and a few pints of some rather nice real ale. I came here a few years ago and it's as good as ever.

As a loacal person living in the Peak District i have frequented The Castle Hotel, Castleton, many times. Over the years i have visited and ate at the premises two or three times a month. Previously you always had a good selection of real ales and wholesome food that represented good, honest, plentiful fayre, that gave excellent value. The service and the staff were first class and whatever ale or food you required, it was always available.
How times have changed. Since summer 2008 i have visited the Castle 5 times and each time have been dissapointed by its decline. Invarioubly a large percentage of the menu is unavailable, many of the real ales have run dry and the service is not good. The tables are not cleaned or cleared away after the previous diners. Whereas previously you always got a great selection of fresh vegetables in the the price of your meal, you now have to buy them separately, which bumps the price up a fair bit. Another pub ruined by a chain.
